Tomorrow morning's Seed Account sale

Our second batch of 100 Seed Accounts will be going on sale at 9AM EDT (1PM GMT) -- we've scripted that, since neither [staff profile] mark nor I will be awake for it, so consider this your warning [site community profile] dw_news post!

Something I forgot to mention in the last [site community profile] dw_news post: if you previously had paid time, and you purchase a Seed Account in this sale, you can open up a support request in the Account Payments category, and we're happy to transfer your paid time to another account for you.

And thanks, everyone, for supporting Dreamwidth. We couldn't be doing this without you.

You guys are awesome. If I had the money to get a seed account I'd seriously consider it - but instead I will be getting a paid account as soon as I get PayPal.

If you've got a credit card, you don't need an actual PayPal account. [staff profile] mark has set up payments so that you can use either a PayPal account or your credit card (still via PayPal, but you don't need to register). D gave more information in the earlier news post if you're interested.

Unfortunately I don't have a credit card either.

I'm really not equipped to be able to pay for things at the moment. :/

Oh, um.. wow! Er, thanks. ^^;

That really wasn't necessary though!

I do appreciate this. I'll make sure it goes to good use. Thanks. :)

Is there anything at all I can do to return the favour somehow?

You don't have to do anything, but if you want to, I'd be happy if you paid it forward by buying paid time for others when you can manage to make payments. (That's what I'm doing, the PAF bought paid time for me when you had to have a Paypal account to pay.) But basically, just using your paid privileges and enjoying Dreamwidth is all the recompense I want.

[personal profile] nine 2009-05-15 01:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I'll make sure to buy a paid account for someone else as soon as I'm able to. And then continue paying for myself once the time you paid for expires. :)

That was really unexpected. Thanks again. :)

Now that I feel I've invested (albeit only $200 out of the $40,000 that this sale will be making for DW) in DW's noble aspirations to NOT become a sell-out like LJ, I sure hope everything works out like the creators hoped. :P

Good luck!

Word.
I'm here because of that.
LJ seriously sold out on us.
Happy Friday!

I'm not seeing the seed account option on the shop/buy paid account page - did this go wrong?

[personal profile] bardling 2009-05-15 12:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Noting that I tried at 1pm GMT sharp, and spent 5 minutes retrying/refreshing, without any luck whatsoever.

Check this thread from the previous post - sounds as if you have to click Premium Account and put your name in, then it goes to another page... Good luck!

[personal profile] bardling 2009-05-15 12:39 pm (UTC)(link)
No, re-read that - it says to click on "buy paid account for $user", then there should be a "seed account" option on page with the radio buttons for the "premium paid"/"paid" options - and there wasn't, and isn't, at least not for me/visible.

It's not 9am EDT yet, so maybe the timezone conversion in the post is wrong?

[personal profile] bardling 2009-05-15 01:19 pm (UTC)(link)
*nod*, sorted. I'd wondered, thanks for the confirmatory pointer. :)
They obviously meant GMT proper, as opposed to BST (British Summer Time).

It still isn't 1pm GMT. It's 13:54 BST now, so still 5 minutes or so shy of 1pm GMT (which is 2pm BST).

Yup I eventually thought of that. Thanks - and apologies to the Dreamwidthers...

Paid Account Fairy

[personal profile] babysprite 2009-05-15 01:23 pm (UTC)(link)
will be here in two weeks. My LJ paid user's account will expire on that day and - given the way LJ "sold out" - I'm thinking of not renewing there, but definitely getting a paid account here to help DW fund it's operating costs and stay advertising-free for ALL users, paid or otherwise.
Happy Friday!

The Paid Account Fairy came early =)

This way you can try out the paid features, and it might make the move from LJ a little easier. I moved over for the same reasons, and I ♥ it here!

I'm another who'd love to have bought a seed account. *sigh* And commenting not to whine about not being able to, but to say "Hi, Dreamwidth! Want to support you financially because you're cool!" So I'll just keep buying paid time as needed, which I know does more for you in the long run but doesn't have the cool factor of getting a seed account.

(Also, thanks! Because it was when I was going over my budget to see if I could possibly squeeze in room for a seed account that I discovered I'd forgotten to budget in one of my May bills, which would have been very bad if I hadn't caught it. So thanks for the occasion to notice that. *grin*)

Another one of the innumerable people saying "Hello~ Wishing I could buy a seed account, because youall rock and want to support, but darn lack of monies...."

You wouldn't be doing another batch of these in a year or so, would you? Because then...then I could save up. O:-)

(I'm not Staff or Support)

From the FAQ: "Seed accounts were sold at the start of Open Beta in order to raise money for the service. These were purchased with a one-time payment, are valid for the lifetime of the service and have all the features of a Premium Paid account. Barring unforeseen circumstances, they will not be offered again."

These were already extra that they hadn't planned to sell so I'd say no. I think Denise explained that offering seed accounts would mean the site was doing bad financially.

[personal profile] severely_lupine 2009-05-16 03:22 am (UTC)(link)
What's the difference between a paid and seed account?

I'd like to get a paid account, mainly to get more icon spaces, but, like many, is not the best time. Well, hopefully if other people get seed accounts and such, DW will continue to expand and get better, even while the economy is not so good.

Paid and seed accounts

[personal profile] cesy 2009-05-16 06:23 am (UTC)(link)
A seed account has all the same features as paid premium, it just doesn't expire. They're doing the sale to raise seed capital to cover the start-up and operating costs for the first year. But paid premium is more sustainable for the site in the long term, and is the same for the user in terms of features and stuff.

Ah... Thanks for the explanation. :-)

[personal profile] thedolphingirl 2009-05-16 06:45 am (UTC)(link)
Good luck with the account sale! I was really happy to find I had an invite code and made one immediately.

Normally I go permanent everywhere, 'cause I tend to use accounts heavily and frequently. But I can't really afford that any time soon, and I have other accounts on other websites, so instead I just wish you good luck ;) I hope DW does well - it seems like a much better start than other sites I volunteered at such as uJournal or AML.

[personal profile] hesadevil 2009-05-16 10:34 am (UTC)(link)
I'd love a seed account here but what with the £ being so weak against every known currency, and being on a pension that's losing its value, I really can't justify spending that kind of money.

I wish you all the best in this endeavour.

I wish I had the funds for a seed account, I'm still getting the hang of this place, still a bit confused by new terminology and I don't quite understand the difference in the account levels but it's all interesting.

I am going to be getting a paid account on Monday. The hubby wants to pay by money order. I just started my account today thanks to a friend for giving me an invite code.

If we weren't on a limited income I would go for the Seed account.

I got a seed account and I hope you guys keep up the good work here. I guess you're working hard in improving this site to convince those who have opened accounts here but don't post or those who refuse to leave LJ to move in.

When I try to make an account it says 'Sorry, that's a reserved account name.' - How do you reserve a name? It kinds sucks since it has always been the name I have used on the net.

I love this website! Seriously!

I will admit that I was a bit worried by this wording in the TOS:

By submitting Content to us for inclusion on the Website, you grant us a world-wide, royalty-free, and non-exclusive license to reproduce, modify, adapt and publish the Content, solely for the purpose of displaying, distributing and promoting the contents of your account, including through downloadable clients and external feeds.

What does this mean, precisely? How are you planning on using what we post? Do we have copyright claim to what we post here? I'm confused.

Not even in the state of paying for a paid/premium account yet, but I'd so love to get a Seed account. Oh well...

Completely unrelated to the post, but will you allow importing of non-LJ/IJ/JF sites in the future? And/or possibly exporting of DW posts to non-LJ/IJ/JF sites?

I'm thinking primarily of blogs hosted on webservers (like self-installed versions of Wordpress, Moveable Type, etc) or from sites such as blogger.com, blogspot.com, etc, etc.
