Invite Codes

mark and I are still trying to find the point at which the hardware setup we're running with right now (which is much smaller than the setup we'll have at open beta launch) starts to complain at us a little bit (but only a little bit!), so we've just released another group of invite codes for our existing personal accounts to hand out.

We did this through our invite code distribution tool, which also allowed us to find a logic flaw in the tool itself -- which is why some users got more than one, and some users didn't get any at all at first! We've corrected the problem, so now every personal account has an invite code to give out to someone else.

You can find your invites at the Invite Someone page. (If you invite someone, please do be sure to point them to dw_news, and specifically our latest update, so that they're aware of the State of the Dreamwidth and know what to do if they think they've found an issue.)

(EDIT: A question elsewhere made me realize I wasn't clear -- the invites went to people who either didn't have any invites or who had already handed out all their invites, so if you hadn't already used the invite code that we gave out to dw_news watchers, you wouldn't have gotten another one. Also, if you'd sent an invite, but the person you sent it to hasn't created a journal with it yet, the invite code isn't counted as used yet.)

Oh hey, how'd you fix the tool? I don't see anything in changelog, and am curious about what was changed.

We didn't, Mark just did the invite code grant manually and I need to file the bug to make the fix. :)

(Yeah, if you got more than one, feel free to give them out. We would've given everyone the same number of codes, but we thought that might make us fall over a little, but we should be able to support the traffic of the people we gave extra codes to by accident.)

Might clarify further that this means that even if you've sent it out, if your current invite code hasn't been actually used to create an account you won't have gotten any new.

(I was vaguely excited about A! New! Code! and went to check, found I had nothing, and had to think for a moment why that was, despite having read this post -- because I've sent it to someone but she hasn't redeemed it yet.)

This is perhaps a little unrelated, but is there a chance that converting OpenID accounts to real accounts will be ready by the beginning of open beta or are we looking at a much longer time frame? I'm asking because I want to know how much effort to put into customizing it and the reading page and so forth.

We almost certainly won't have it ready for open beta, unless a great coding miracle happens! We're hoping to have something in place within a 1-2 month timeframe after open beta launch.

Hmmm, as a suggestion, would it be possible to list the email I sent the code to on the invite page? So if they don't use it I can either poke them to use it or let them know I'm giving it to someone else?

Any invites you have available are on the Invite Someone page -- you can send them out from there. (We don't send you the invites in email or anything to give out; they're managed on-site.)

Question: All open ID accounts will get a code before April 30th, right? What if the person who has that open ID has been invited by someone else in the meantime? Will the system notice (assuming the person has the same e-mail both places) or will we get an invite anyway, and if so, can we then give it to someone else?

If a code is unused, it sits around on your invite page saying it's been sent out but unused. You can send it to another person if you like; I just did this today with one that hadn't been used for a few days. So after April 30th, if someone hasn't used the code you sent them but has, I'd just re-send it to someone else.

There has been some talk about being able to connect an OpenID to a full account, once you're properly signed up, so you can take control of all the comments made by that OpenID. This isn't expected by open beta (Apr 30) as far as I know, but I think it is being considered for later.

im gathering what you are saying here is that you get an invite code when you sign up (are invited by someone else:)) but i havent got any invite code and i would like to distribute one.

You don't get one straight away. They're handed out from time to time, though, so you can check your Invite page to see if you have any. Speaking entirely unofficially (which is to say, out of the nearest available orifice) I wouldn't expect you'd have to wait more than a few days, given the recent distributions.
