As I just said in another comment -- when we forked LJ instead of deciding to write from scratch, it was absolutely the correct decision because it came with so many benefits, but it also meant we had ten years of technical debt on the balance sheets on Day One of existence and have been accruing additional tech debt at the usual rates for the 14 years since. It's an interesting challenge, that's for sure.
DW is absolutely a labor of love for us, and we're going to keep this place running until the end of time or the heat-death of the universe, whichever comes first. I do sometimes fantasize about what we could do with, like, 1/1000th of the hiring budget that Twitter or Facebook has, though. (Not enough to be willing to compromise our principles enough to make Twitter or Facebook money, but still.)
