December points bonus

Hello, all! It's December, and that means two things: only a few more weeks before we show 2022 the door, and (as I announced last month) it's time for our annual December holiday points bonus.

For the month of December, all orders in the Shop of points and paid time (whether for you or as a gift) will have 10% of your completed cart total sent to you in points when you finish the transaction. For instance, if you buy an order of 12 months of paid time for $35 (350 points), you'll get 35 points when the order is complete, to use on a future purchase.

This bonus only applies to orders of paid time and points: rename tokens and bonus icon slots don't receive bonuses. If you buy paid time for a friend, the bonus points will be sent to you, not to them.

The order must be completed in the month of December. IMPORTANT: "the month of December" is defined by server time (which is in UTC), not by your local time zone. So, for instance, if you're in EST, the promo ends on December 31 at 7PM your time. Every year a few people think that they have more time to make an order than they do, so if you want to take advantage of the promo, it's a good idea to do it before the last day.

This is our annual way of saying "thank you" to everyone who supports us enough to keep this wild ride lurching along. This year, DW turned 13, which means it now would be old enough to have its own account on the site without parental permission. (I probably wouldn't have given permission if it asked -- I know what we get up to around here -- but go ask your father.) That makes 13 years of doing exactly what everyone confidently predicted would fail immediately: providing you all with a stable, solid online home that doesn't show you advertising, doesn't sell your data, and doesn't have venture capital or outside investment to repay. We gambled that there were enough of you who wanted an online home run by people you could predict (and not mercurial billionaires trying to mug every passerby for $8) and were willing to support us keeping it running, and that gamble has paid off in spades.

So thank you to each and every one of you who has helped to keep this place alive long enough to reach its teenagerhood, and here's to many more. We couldn't do it without you, and we're so glad you came along for the ride. Mark and I wish each and every one of you happy holidays, whichever ones you celebrate, and may 2023 be kind to every one of you.

If I want to buy six months' paid time for someone else, is there a way to apply the 10% point bonus to that, so I don't wind up with 17 extra points?

I have a seed account, and buying someone else time is a way I can continue to support the site. I'd rather not have extra points just sitting in my account, and I also don't want to make the recipient wait an extra ten days and buy the time on January 1st.

I had to dust off my one non-RP account to log in...

DW has been my RP home for more than a decade now. My primary RP account (which was created in 2013, so it's NOT old enough to get an account without parental permission). I looked at my stats on that account and I've cleared 50k comments (adding both made and received), and certainly millions of words. I'm always happy to renew my paid account to keep the lights on.

I'm a bit late commenting here, but I want to begin by stating that I began using LJ back in 2004. It was a huge part of my online life for years, but as time went on and I got older, I had less and less time to post. Eventually, I would pop on just once a year, then even less. I tried to return to it today after ages away, to find something to reignite that lost spark, whatever it was. It was pointless. The communities I knew were gone, and years of interactions with people were lost to the void. Many of the holdouts were also long-silent, but one of them left a farewell message, and in it, they mentioned this site. I was unaware of Dreamwidth existence until just hours ago, but I must say that it has warmed a sense of nostalgia in me. I'm excited to see where things head in 2023, and will be trying to get others on board here that may, like me, have not known of this site.

Happy holidays all, and be well in 2023.

Happy Birthday, DW! I don't want to imagine a world without you. To many, many more!
