Welcome to Dreamwidth, Tumblr folks!

With the new update to Tumblr's community guidelines announcing that they will no longer permit adult content on their site, we'd like to take a moment to reassure all y'all that we have your backs. With a very few exceptions (such as spam and the like), if it's legal under US law, it's okay to post here. We're 100% user-supported, with no advertisers and no venture capitalists to please, and that means we're here for you, not for shady conglomerates that buy up your data and use it in nefarious ways.

Tumblr's definition of "adult content" seems to be inherently visual, and I also wanted to remind people that we do have basic image hosting. (It's definitely not as slick and easy to use as Tumblr's, I won't lie, but it does exist.) If you want to include images in your posts, you can upload them and the site will give you HTML that you can paste into your entry. Or, if you have post-by-email set up, just attach the image to the end of your email and it'll be posted. All users have a 500MB image hosting quota right now. I know that's small for people looking for a place to host NSFW image blogs, but we are reviewing usage statistics to see if we can increase it, or at least make it possible for people to pay for more quota like you can for more icons.

For those asking whether we have a mobile app: we don't at the moment! There are many (soooooo many) prerequisites that we have to do first, which we've been working on but haven't yet finished, because we're dealing with a lot of systems and architecture decisions that were made nearly 20 years ago by now. (A mobile app would also be subject to the same censorship pressure Tumblr faced -- it's looking pretty good that Apple taking the Tumblr app out of the App Store was the proximate cause of Tumblr's content guidelines change, and Apple is notoriously strict on apps for sites that allow user-generated content -- so even once we have one, it's even odds on how long it'll be able to stay available for certain platforms.) We've been trying to improve the website's experience on small screens in the meantime, and that's an ongoing project that we'll do our best to devote some more attention to over the next few months.

Feel free to use the comments to this post to recommend communities to join and to make new friends, whether you're here for the first time as a Tumblr refugee or have been here since the start (and any range in between). To the newcomers: we're happy to have you join us. Welcome aboard!

(Comment notification emails may be delayed for an hour or two, due to the high volume of emails generated by a [site community profile] dw_news post. This was posted at 2105/9:05PM EST (see in your time zone). Please don't worry about delayed notification emails until at least two hours after that. I also apologize to anyone who gets a notification for this post twice; we're trying to figure that one out.)

I've been part of Dreamwidth ever since LiveJournal had a similar TOS-related exodus, and Dreamwidth's staff was similarly welcoming.

This is a good place. You're in good hands here. Hello and welcome, all, and I hope you all come to like it here as much as we do.

You're all wonderful, and I appreciate what you do so, so much. Dreamwidth actually got me back into blogging for the first time since I was a wee one on Xanga. I actually feel safe here, which is pretty fucking amazing, considering everything going on in the world.

Just adding another "yes, please!" for the option of paying for more image hosting space. That would truly make this the tumblr-killer, in my mind.

Another thing that would be amazing is being able to search on a tag and see recent posts that are visible to you that used that tag. [If this is already a feature, please enlighten me!]

Have a great December; I hope you get some rest!

On Dreamwidth's Latest Things page*, it links the Most Popular Tags at the top, and will refresh to posts that are tagged with them. It doesn't cover all tags, but other than that it's basically what you're asking for :)

we don't know anything about how possible the technical side of this would be, or if you've already thought of it, but what you said about conflict with private journalling got us thinking. especially since that's mainly what we're here for. what immediately came to mind was how, when you edit the date of a post, it brings up a checkbox saying "don't show on reading pages." could a "show in public tags"/"don't show in public tags" per-post toggle option work maybe? or per-journal if per-post is too much?

...like we said, we've no idea about how things function under the hood and you could well already be working with that idea or have considered and eliminated it as unfeasible, but we just thought we'd put it here in case of the slim chance it actually helped. <3

we super appreciate the privacy aspect of dw, and heavily use custom filters ourselves, but we also agree the site could probably benefit from more ways to find specific posts of interest outside one's circle, maybe? it'd be a handy way to find resources or content one needs/seeks that isn't available in the immediate areas one already knows, and possibly connect with new friends as well. though yeah, if there wasn't an option to avoid the attention, we'd be terrified to ever post public, haha. we already keep about 99.99% of our posts locked to only ourselves. x3 so long as inclusion is optional though, global tag-search would be a great feature.

we really appreciate that you're alert to the needs of your users and you're paying attention to the privacy/"i just want a quiet little corner" side of the matter already. we love that you're on top of this! thankyou! <3 <3 <3

yeah, you folks here at dreamwidth always have our backs on this stuff. we've consistently seen you all supporting privacy, safety, and different interaction & site-use styles with every change and update you make. but it's still really good to hear that from you! <3

haha, yeah, poor programmer. we don't know much about coding but we've lurked around in linux developer communities a bit over the years, and vaguely picked up on some general stuff. so we know that sort of detail always needs sorted out before coding starts, it's not the programmer's job to handle diplomacy and negotiations, after all! XD we're glad you're taking the time to work it out and do things the right way.

You'd also need to be careful to distinguish "this post shows up in public tag lists" from "this post has a public/access-only/private security level". I could see some confusion resulting over that, especially if the expectation is "I didn't select for this to show up publicly, so I shouldn't be getting comments from people I don't know."

That kind of division between journal-internal-only exposure of a tag and appearing in a public search is what I thought of, too. I do think it's a benefit of tumblr that you an broadcast to an unknown audience by tagging, because then you can catch people who may be interested but with whom you have no prior conneciton, but the fact that you're forced to is not good.

conflicting hardcore with the use case of "I'm here for private journaling and don't want wider attention"

....yeah, I saw A LOT of wank on Tumblr with global tags, like when Elementary premiered and BBC Sherlock fans made that tag unusable by posting hate and yes porn and general awfulness in it. I also personally don't like the idea of my public posts being in a global tag stream that people feel free to hop into as if they're on Twitter, because that also leads to endless wank in my experience.

Re: <3

May I suggest a second field for sitewide tags? So in addition to personal journal tags, there'd be another space where one could input global tags. Make it opt-in instead of opt-out, and let the site-wide tags be different to the (potentially idiosyncratic) journal-wide tags. (Example: a book is called The Bookname; one might have been tagging for it with The Bookname, while the "established" global tag might become Bookname. While one could retag with Manage Tags relatively easily, for people who have various prefixes in their tags for tag categorization, this'd be annoying.)

Then you need a potential army of tag wranglers like on AO3, though...

(testing commenting by email, here. hope it looks ok)

eta: Or, I suppose, you might want such an army, not necessarily need - after all, there isn't such wrangling on Tumblr, and I guess it mostly self-corrects by "if you spell your tag wrong, people won't see it, or the wrong people will see it" mechanism?

Re: <3

I don't know - reading [personal profile] extrapenguin's idea again, it might not be ideal, since the first and main complaint from like, everyone (even I'm gonna do this at some point) likely will be, "Whoops, I just input private tags into the global tag box, I know I can blank out the tag and re-save the post to erase that but this private tag's already out there for the moment so what do I do now/how do I avoid this in the future", etc.

Other than that it's still a very interesting idea. I really want us to have (ideally #hashtags, because they've grown on me over the years despite not using Twitter to post my own thoughts since something like 2012!) a way to have global tags to attract readerships we don't or won't have otherwise.

The arguments for it are there.

Just looking at public posts on my own blog I can see where I'll get (and often, before posting, I *know* I'll get) at best anemic responses from my Circle where if the tags on those posts were globally available, I might get more positive responses (obviously from people I don't know or only know in passing, since after 100 10 years on DW I know a lot of people only in passing) and might even make more acquaintances to follow and be followed by, and that's mainly what I'm after: agreement on topics I'm passionate about and something in common with others to maybe sort of build off of, and global tags (or more easily discoverable ones, at the least) would be the best shortcut to that outcome I can think of.

We already have an excellent system in place in how DW sorts private vs. public tags so that even a tag in use on both public and private posts gets sorted correctly so private posts don't show up under the publicly available version of that tag, and it just impresses the heck out of me so much, so it looks to be the best system to build an expanded tag function off of that any more privacy-minded site like this one could have, and I just want to to rah-rah it to death but don't have many concrete ideas to lay down for it beyond that, at the moment.

(There's a whole other wishlist of mine and one of the things on it that relates to this is how I want to be able to sort private vs. public tags for use as a personal search feature, ie: "Only show me my own public uses of this tag, or only show me my own private uses of that one" but if I recall correctly it's a bit much to implement so might never make out of the thicket of ideas posted to DW Suggestions.)

Actually, you can do that last bit, of showing your own public/private uses of a tag, but you have to input it manually. (And I think you need to have a paid account too, but I don't want to log into an account that's not paid atm to double check.)

i thought i'd drop a few communities that might be of note, especially if you're a tumblr rper orrrr if you just need to fill up those 15 icon spaces!

Is there any chance of permitting image embedding to AO3 SPECIFICALLY? I understand that the bandwidth incurred from image hosting that allows external linking to every other site would be cost prohibitive, but I have kind of lost a place to host illustrations for my fics and it's killing me.

Thank you, thank you, thank you for all you do. You're the best.

I've had a dreamwidth several years now, but I've found that I hadn't needed it until now. I'm very eager to make the change, but nervous about finding art blogs to follow among other things. I don't really know where to start, at all.

I think the Sims community would almost entirely move here right now if you had some serious image hosting. Tons of people in it created accounts here anyway just today. And that's a HUGE community. Tumblr's flagging us incredibly hard, and not only NSFW stuff. (Not that that would be acceptable either.) Sim cat pictures. Houses. And Sim pregnancy pics, whoo boy are those getting hit.

But we are a thoroughly pic-dependent community, with a typical story Simblr having way more than 500 MB of pictures on it. Lots of money waiting there, especially if you make gift-giving of picture space easy.

It is true and image hosting sites have not gotten any better since most Sims people moved to Tumblr. Having to go back to relying entirely on tinypic is not a comforting thought. They like to randomly delete pictures alot.

To both of you - you've probably considered this option, but would using Imgur work for image linking as an interim solution? I'd hate to see anyone lose anything in the purge :(

Thanks for the suggestion, but I have 2.88 gigs of photos in my Tumblthree backup folder. That's a lot to try to upload to Imgur. And I'm far from one of the oldest or most active story Simblrs.

What I really need is somewhere that can give me at least 50 gigs of image hosting. I'd happily pay for it so long as it wasn't the huge price that photobucket imposed. I'd prefer a terabyte, because I plan on playing and uploading stories about Sims on and off till I'm dead, but I can start with smaller.

Imgbox.com offers unlimited hosting, at least for now. I'm really enjoying using it, personally.

I suggest using http://cubeupload.com, they're the best right now as an alternative unless someone tech savvy to set up https://chevereto.com/free a image hosting script that can be upped to a VPS server.

Oooh, thank you for that second link, I've wanted something like that for a while because Imgur's ads have been getting obnoxious and their site doesn't play well with mobile - was going to write my own eventually, but pre-existing solutions are great :)

I'm not sure if this is an option for you, but Google Photos has unlimited uploads (unless they're, like, super, super hi-res). Embedding from Google Photos is fussy, but you can do it through a third party.

Alternatively, you can embed directly from Microsoft OneDrive. However, this may not be an option for you. I'm not sure how many gigs you get from a free account. My husband and I have a terabyte, so image limits aren't a concern for me.

Someday, PixelFed may be an option, but they're still in closed beta.

I know, I know, I'm a slave to Big Data. But, since Google gobbled up Picasa and Flickr went into more or less a paid service, hosts that let you embed images reliably and for free (without ads) are kind of hard to find nowadays.

There's FOSS (free open source software) "store"/app distribution via f-droid (f-droid.org). You install the f-droid app on your phone (don't know if there is an Apple version, but given that both iPhone and iPad OSes are actually customized proprietary versions of Linux, as is Android, I can't see why it wouldn't work... if it isn't already there).

On Android, you just have to tell your system (and set the setting) to install apps from outside sources. I don't know how it works on iPhone/iPads. But once you do that on Android, you can install the f-droid app and DL FOSS apps all you want. DW could create something like that, I would think...

(Sorry this is long, but it's a thorough explanation of the issue with Android vs. iOS app development.)

tbh, I haven't been looking, but I haven't seen many iOS apps on f-droid.org or in the f-droid app (although I'm not really looking for many, outside utilities, and utilities such as cleanup utilities or memory freeing utilities would be specific to the OS, Android in my case).

I don't think that is particularly because Android developers hate iOS. It's because Apple is much more stingy and protective of their code with app developers. Android's OS source code is wide open, so it's easy to develop Android apps. Apple's is much more locked down, which makes it more difficult to develop iOS apps.

Some people develop for both Android and iOS. But if a given app doesn't get approved by Apple's much more stringent requirements in order to list it in the Apple store, then they can only distribute it via other app outlets or via their own web sites. Consequently, there is also one of those "use at your own risk" scenarios for non-Apple-store apps. Which is mostly also the case with Android, but the vast majority of the Android apps I've found at f-droid, I've also found on Google Play. Whereas iOS-compatible apps on f-droid, though, may not be found in Apple's app store simply because Apple's requirements for apps and developers are so much more stringent.

People shouldn't blame f-droid (or any) developers for not having more iOS apps or making iOS compatible apps for the ones they've already released for Android, when the reason is Apple's corporate policy of not sharing their code as open source and keeping proprietary instead. That makes it much harder for Android developers to address issues particular to iOS. So many don't bother. Open Source developers typically aren't getting paid -- their apps are free. So why would they bother if they themselves don't use iOS, Apple won't openly share iOS source code, and it's a PITA to develop apps for iOS because of the latter?

[Boring history-of-IT-development details: This situation is similar to the way things were with desktop computers (said the old ex-IT support person): Microsoft (actually, originally, IBM) were willing to share DOS/Windows OS code freely. So many, many programs were developed for Windows... and simultaneously, Windows computers came to utterly dominate the desktop PC market. Whereas the code for Macs was not shared by Apple, so there were comparatively less of the same programs for Macs as there were for Windoze, and Macs remained constantly in the minority in capturing the market share of PC sales. Even when big corporate software companies like Adobe and Microsoft wrote Mac OS versions of their Windows programs, programmers typically had to be hired to *specifically* to write Mac software because it was just fundamentally different than writing software for Windows.)]

F-droid openly states that f-droid is for sharing FOSS (Free Open Source Software) on their front web page. Apple's source is not open. Probably never will be. Hence there are few iOS compatible apps on f-droid.

I'm not saying there aren't pros to Apple's corporate policy: There are. For one thing, iOS developers make more money on their apps than Android developers, even though iOS devices are a much smaller share of the smartphone market. (Although it's not really fair to compare development of open-source software apps for an open-source OS to a closed-source OS and the fewer developers meeting Apple's stricter requirements for apps sold in the Apple Store.

iOS devices system updates are less frequent and more stable than Android's OS updates, because Google pushes out Android updates more often to deal with issues that previous versions of Android had/have. iOS devices are more protected from viruses or trojans than Androids (though whether that's because their system is more locked up, or because they are a minority of the smartphone market, is unclear... as was the case with Windows' comparative vulnerability to viruses/trojans/malware vs. Mac OS X's apparent resistance).

[i.e., why would hackers waste time targeting only 15% of the PC market writing viruses for Macs, when they could target 85% of the market by targeting Windows's many vulnerabilities... and, as a bonus, their virus/trojan/malware can also spread faster and do more of whatever they wrote it to do precisely because networked Windows PCs, which dominate the PC market, can easily and quickly spread it to each other. Although in my years of Android phone usage, I've never gotten a virus or trojan... the utilities and "cleaner" software I've used has only discovered abusive app permissions that access details of the phone (such as call logs and contacts) for apps that have no need of this (e.g. a medical drug encyclopedia app)]

Nevertheless it's a theoretical possibility that Androids are likelier to get viruses/trojans than iOS phones. That is the nature of making OS source openly available. The con to that pro, for Apple devices, is that some Android apps are never developed for iOS devices because it's just too much of a hassle, especially for free apps, for which the developers only get paid by donations, if anything at all.

Apologies for my verbosity...!

Whoops, didn't see your reply until now... I just posted a lengthy explanation of why there are fewer iOS apps than Android... way more verbosely than your very succinct summary, lol!

Yeah, I know people think installing non-store apps is sketchy... but, at least on Android, some of those apps are really cool or let you have more control over your device (especially wrt removing the bloatware most Android phones come with from major cellular carriers and their pre-paid subsidiaries).

Which is another difference between iOS and Android devices, but I think it's more a difference in their uses bases: Android seems to attract more technogeek types because they are much more likely to tinker with and customize their devices (e.g. jailbreak and install custom ROMs).

Whereas iOS devices and their user base are much more the 'it just works, I don't care how or why, and I never want to screw up my phone and have to factory reset it repeatedly like you clowns' users. (Said the woman whose tinkering has required factory resets twice over a span of 6 Android smartphones, lol!)
:D

Not that there aren't jailbreak users of iOS devices -- there certainly are. I just think more of that user type prefers Android because it's so much easier to jailbreak/install custom ROMs. (And those jailbreaker users of Android are also much more likely to also own an iOS device, typically also jailbroken.)

The ultimate point of the jailbreak/custom ROMs devices is that the user has more control over the device (or *as much* control over the device) as Google... whereas the majority user base of iOS devices don't care to have more control over their iOS devices and are content with things the way they are.

Also I think there is a significant subset of Android users (again, almost 100% of them, tech people) who are privacy/permission freaks. iOS users in general don't seem to have the problems with device privacy/permissions that this subset of Android users do.

Just mho... YMMV.

Should I advertise Vidders.net here as a way to host vids?

I haven't really been on that site in a while; but it's a pretty good fandom companion that could use some growth. unlike youtube, you aren't at risk of having your fandom video taken down because you used the most appropriate(if legally red taped) music for it.

Will definitely start posting here more, though.
