Automatic payments are a thing that we couldn't offer for a while because we needed to use one of the bulletproof payment processors because of our content policies (you remember that debacle, I'm sure) and they charged even more for it than their already exorbitant fees for one-time payments, yeah. Now that we have a sufficient enough history and the landscape has changed just enough that we can be back in the mainstream payment system with a provider that supports it, I do want to do it, but so many implementations of it are so scummy and so unethical and I gotta put in the work to figure out how to build a frontend for hooking into the payment processor's system for it that doesn't have the end goal of exploiting "people forgot to cancel the auto-renew in time"! Not only because it's extremely scuzzy, but also because a) I'm one of those people with ADHD who always forgets to cancel the autorenew in time myself and I really don't want to be preying on other people like me, heh, and b) it generates a high support volume and we don't really have the capacity to absorb that. So basically, yeah, it's a thing but we need better admin tools for handling payments and paid time issues and a lot of work to try to do it in an ethical and non-dark-patterny kind of way.
