Dreamwidth access in Russia: please stay safe!
We have discovered that Dreamwidth is no longer blocked by Roskomnadzor, the Russian government agency responsible for maintaining a list of sites that are blocked for not complying with Russia's internet censorship laws. We are announcing this because there are two things our Russian users need to know:
1) We do not know why they have unblocked us. We are not sure when they unblocked us. (We don't check regularly!) We have not been removed from the blocklist because of anything we did. We have not, do not, and will not ever comply with any censorship request from the Russian government. We have not, do not, and will not ever comply directly with any request from the Russian government for data about our users. We do not even look at censorship requests from Roskomnadzor or government requests for data about Russian users. We delete the emails without reading them. Any non-US government that wants information from us about our users needs to get a US court order from a US court that says we have to give them that information. We have never gotten a US court order that says we have to give information to any foreign government about one of our users. If we ever do get a notice that any foreign government, but especially the Russian government, was trying to use the US court system to get information about one of our users, we would fight that case in court as hard as we possibly could.
2) If you are living inside Russia, or using any ISP that uses the Roskomnadzor block list, please keep using a VPN to access Dreamwidth. We do not know why they have unblocked us. It is possible that they have unblocked us because they want people to use the site on a connection they can control. We can keep the Russian government from getting any information from us, and we can protect the actual contents of what you post on the site, but it is possible that they can use the fact you visited Dreamwidth against you. Please keep yourself safe. Use a VPN every time you visit Dreamwidth.
All comments are screened because this is a very divisive issue and we do not have the capacity to properly moderate any discussion. We'd like to ask our users from the rest of the world to remember that many of our Russian users are here because they oppose the actions of the Russian government, including but not only the illegal invasion of Ukraine, and have chosen to use Dreamwidth because we do not cooperate with the Russian government. We stand in solidarity with the people of Ukraine and with the people of Russia who risk retaliation for their activism against their government.
Thank you to
