Firefox does indeed store the passwords encrypted these days. I was kind of apprehensive about Firefox messing up its passwords, or being locked out of them if (for whatever reason) Firefox could not run. Then I found a small external Python program that can (if you give it the master password!) decrypt Firefox' password database for you (so you can use the passwords in another password manager if you wish).
