Welcome to Dreamwidth, Tumblr folks!

With the new update to Tumblr's community guidelines announcing that they will no longer permit adult content on their site, we'd like to take a moment to reassure all y'all that we have your backs. With a very few exceptions (such as spam and the like), if it's legal under US law, it's okay to post here. We're 100% user-supported, with no advertisers and no venture capitalists to please, and that means we're here for you, not for shady conglomerates that buy up your data and use it in nefarious ways.

Tumblr's definition of "adult content" seems to be inherently visual, and I also wanted to remind people that we do have basic image hosting. (It's definitely not as slick and easy to use as Tumblr's, I won't lie, but it does exist.) If you want to include images in your posts, you can upload them and the site will give you HTML that you can paste into your entry. Or, if you have post-by-email set up, just attach the image to the end of your email and it'll be posted. All users have a 500MB image hosting quota right now. I know that's small for people looking for a place to host NSFW image blogs, but we are reviewing usage statistics to see if we can increase it, or at least make it possible for people to pay for more quota like you can for more icons.

For those asking whether we have a mobile app: we don't at the moment! There are many (soooooo many) prerequisites that we have to do first, which we've been working on but haven't yet finished, because we're dealing with a lot of systems and architecture decisions that were made nearly 20 years ago by now. (A mobile app would also be subject to the same censorship pressure Tumblr faced -- it's looking pretty good that Apple taking the Tumblr app out of the App Store was the proximate cause of Tumblr's content guidelines change, and Apple is notoriously strict on apps for sites that allow user-generated content -- so even once we have one, it's even odds on how long it'll be able to stay available for certain platforms.) We've been trying to improve the website's experience on small screens in the meantime, and that's an ongoing project that we'll do our best to devote some more attention to over the next few months.

Feel free to use the comments to this post to recommend communities to join and to make new friends, whether you're here for the first time as a Tumblr refugee or have been here since the start (and any range in between). To the newcomers: we're happy to have you join us. Welcome aboard!

(Comment notification emails may be delayed for an hour or two, due to the high volume of emails generated by a [site community profile] dw_news post. This was posted at 2105/9:05PM EST (see in your time zone). Please don't worry about delayed notification emails until at least two hours after that. I also apologize to anyone who gets a notification for this post twice; we're trying to figure that one out.)

Process-wise, we have perpetually been in need of good designers, both UI/UX design and "make this layout look pretty", ideally also capable of some light frontend/conversion/implementation work but hell, we'd take wireframes for some of the stuff like image hosting frontend, since a good designer would definitely be able to improve things.
Dammit, you're making me want to pick up learning coding again.

...let me figure out if I'm applying to grad school in the next 6 months first and then revisit this.

I'd throw myself bodily on "make this layout look pretty" but I don't have enough devices to test across to make sure it'd look pretty on all of them! If we had a few iOS and Linux-y things laying around (much less "older versions of MS Windows things laying around", which we don't) that might be a whole different story.

Chrome browser has a good device view emulator in their dev tools tab.

Huh! I use Chromium, not Chrome, so I'd have to check if the same emulator's included - I'd like to assume it is but better off checking. Does it offer true emulation, unlike say, Windows Safari, which just changed the referrer and otherwise displayed pages same as it would, otherwise (as do most online emulators)?

From my understanding, in a certain view you can drag the window size around or pre-set it to the resolution or code type you'd get if you were using certain phones or tablets. I don't know enough tech to tell you what's what, but from the layman's POV it looked very handy.

I just googled and what Chrome/Chromium has is a device/viewport emulator/breakpoint checker (https://developers.google.com/web/tools/chrome-devtools/device-mode/). I can simulate what it does and check/change breakpoints without it, mostly because I learned to the old-school way (by narrowing/expanding my browser windows and figuring out the breakpoints on various computers, laptops, phones, and tablets (which reminds me, my comment sections need refining on narrower breakpoints).

What I lack/want is BrowserStacks or something similar so I can test on any device because devices can have incredible display variations (they have their own proprietary browsers, which I don't even know if BrowserStacks covers. They have proprietary code in the case of iOS/Mac, especially. Chrome is a, uh, beast that practically needs a separate style sheet for web pages to look right in depending on what one's trying to do).

Chrome on say, my phone and this laptop won't display CSS the same. Ditto Firefox and even Edge. So yeah, the emulation Chrome offers might come in handy for coders seeking a general idea of how elements are laying out, but I like to be more thorough so would be after something more robust.

I am a QA to trade, but currently pretty much 100% manual (I am aces at prepping a test pack for automating, actually doing it... not so much).

All that said, I'm looking to get into automation and I have the theory of testing (and the qualifications and day job) already, so what languages/tools should I be learning to come in and help out?

The core of the site is Perl, so that's where to start. Deciding whether to stick with the current test framework or get something else is probably the next big step.

Grand, thank you - I'll take a look at that and see how I get on with it.

I will also try and keep an eye out for Test/QA info around the site - I'm a testing nerd (I am currently assisting organising my city's Ministry of Testing meetups... mostly because I've been going and getting involved and got tagged in) and I'm' a fandom nerd, so it'd be nice to tie the two up.

what would be most useful that could be done by someone who, although not familiar with LJ fork specifically, is fairly well versed in perl.... but unfortunately, although not having a job, is also limited due to disabilities (good days vs bad ones, plus support for disabled spouse)- iow very irregular hours of availability, sometimes with long stretches where I cant do much followed by the reverse.

I know there are old things to take care of, but also things tumblr people are clamouring for, so to help retain the influx of these users and the paid accounts that may translate into, it seems to me that some balance between deleing with both the old and new things might be needed? TBH I like tackling new things if that'd be of use, but I wouldn't say no to working on older stuff either.

If you have a discord account, there's a channel for DW Dev work, which is probably a good place to pick up short term projects/find out what other people are working on. you can join via https://discord.gg/dreamwidth though it'll drop you in a introductions channel, so someone can make sure you're not a spambot before you can see anything else
