Yeah, I learned with a bunch of LJ launches (anyone remember the schools directory? Or the "translate the site into other languages" volunteer teams?) that expecting volunteers to standardize and sanitize user-inputted data is inevitably going to lead to overworked, cranky volunteers (who then need you to build dozens of tools and systems that will let them standardize and sanitize the user-inputted data more efficiently so they aren't overworked and cranky) who have a very high burnout rate and very low mean time to burnout, so it would definitely be a more Tumblr-ish "if you spell it wrong nobody will see it, so y'all better agree among yourselves what the standard tag for a fandom/pairing/etc is" rather than an AO3-style tag wrangling setup. We try to avoid designing things that depend on "a mythical army of volunteers who will TOTES show up as soon as we release the feature, guys!!!!" as much as we can...
