DW News: 18 December 2016

Hello, Dreamwidth! I know: it's been ages since the last news post. There are many reasons, all of them tedious and boring and basically boiling down to being so ready to see the backside of 2016. (Seriously, at this point I think we may need to drive a stake through this year's heart and bury it in a silver coffin at the crossroads by the light of the full moon.) I'd been hoping to write you one of our usual chatty updates to let you know what we've been up to (we have been doing stuff! it's very interesting stuff!) but various and sundry tedious boring things have meant I didn't have the time before departing tomorrow on the extended vacation my wife and I are taking to ritually cleanse 2016 from our lives...

I do have some news that I wanted to share before departure, though! Many of you have already noticed it, but for those of you who haven't or who are new here: the December holiday points bonus has been active since the beginning of December. All orders of paid time or points made in the Dreamwidth Shop during the month of December will receive a 10% points bonus to spend or save for the future. For instance, if you buy a 12-month paid account (350 points), you'll get another 35 points once the order is complete for you to use on a future order. This bonus only applies to orders of paid time or points -- bonus icons and rename tokens don't receive points bonuses. If you buy paid time or points for a friend, the bonus points will go to you, not to them.

IMPORTANT TO KNOW: When we say "the month of December", that goes by server time, which is in UTC. It's not midnight your local time zone! (For people in Pacific time, for instance, the promotion ends at 4PM on 31 December.) Every year a few people get bitten by this, so if you're planning on buying paid time during December, it's best to do it on 30 December or before.

We do this promotion every December as a way to say "thank you" to everyone who supports us. We're a tiny company with no outside investors, no venture capitalist money, and no advertising (anywhere): your payments are what lets us keep offering the site to everyone. Since our income comes entirely from you, you know that the decisions we make are always and only for you, not for advertisers, marketers, or the people who hold the purse strings. You're what lets us keep this place running, and we love you for it.

I hate to post and run, but I'll be leaving you all in the eminently capable hands of [staff profile] mark, [staff profile] karzilla, and [personal profile] alierak for the next few weeks while Sarah and I investigate ways to exorcise the fetid corpse of this bloody year. Happy holidays, whichever of them you're celebrating, and I'll be back in 2017 with a run-through of what we've been up to lately.

(Comment notifications may be delayed for up to an hour or two, due to the high volume of notifications generated after an update is posted to [site community profile] dw_news. This was posted at 3:35AM EST (see in your time zone). Please don't worry about delayed notifications until at least two hours after that.)

If you find a sure way to exorcise the year, let us know. That knowledge needs to be shared.
And thank you for running the site the way you do. I'm relatively new here. It's nice.

I wish both of you nothing but the very best on your travels, and hopefully you'll come back all rejuvenated and ready to go. I don't normally talk politics--although that *might* change soon--but I think as far as that's concerned here in the United States we're fucked with the in-coming administration. But anywho, I know I've said this before and I'll say it again: Thank you so much for Dreamwidth! It is truly wonderful, and I hope and pray that it will be around for eternity if not longer. I know I only have a free account, but I couldn't be happier with what y'all have done thus far.

2016 has seriously been awful.

Thanks for all you and your team do! This is a great site and it really shows that you are user-oriented. I'm happy to contribute to help keep things that way.

Enjoy your vacation!

The bright side to 2016 is that after this year, I will never take education for granted again. Completing all the courses on Khan Academy (starting with maths, sciences, economics/finance and then moving onto history and the rest) and looking into certifications and if those vocations lead to work I'll use that to get into grad school.

I think this about sums it up (it's a youtube video; warning for sound and, you know, the word fuck.)

Anyway! Thank you for all of your hard work over the year, guys. We really appreciate this platform and everything that you stand for -- including the lack of advertisement. I hope you and your wife have a wonderful vacation.

Love the video, and it sums up this year perfectly. Aside from the sudden death of a neighbor friend this morning, this year's been very good for me both personally and professionally. I found out about my neighbor's death not long after I posted my first comment here. He was a great guy too.

I so very much appreciate it that you're keeping it real here! And I totally agree with the above comments on pretty much all counts: 2016 has really sucked.

Dreamwidth has been a G-d send to me and some of my friends. I wish I could persuade more of my friends to abandon the ... competition. I don't trust them anymore since they got bought out by a company in a country where, for all I know, they support a certain dictator who may have thrown a recent election in my country, and I'm pissed. (Alas, I still have a mirror on the competition's site, but only because I can't seem to persuade my friends on that site to come over to this site instead. In fact, what I really ought to do is buy some more DW points to give out to anyone who will finally abandon that site and open a journal over here.)

Ritually cleanse 2016! I love it. You guys are fantastic. I have a paid a/c right now even though I haven't really figured out how to use it because you are fantastic. I would leave LJ if I could talk my friends into coming over here.

Really sorry about your election. Oz is nervous!

Enjoy your time off and thanks for al you do for us!

Also, agreeing about this fucking clusterfuck of a fucking year. May it die and stay dead.

I feel you on Fuck This Fucking Year. Good luck, and thanks for the update!

(Is there any way that news post notifications could be made to not interfere with other notifs? Have them sent out by a different server or something? I'm sure you've thought of ways, but I'm curious to know if it's At All Possible to fix in the future.)

This is my reaction every single time someone drops the word 'fuck' around me and then apologizes.
