I just tried to upload a couple of images by email and it worked perfectly. But would it be possible for DW to leave the file names alone rather than renaming them to a random string of numbers?

This was a major annoyance for me on LJ when I transferred the contents of my scrapbook to another image hosting service in preparation for letting my paid account lapse, as it made it impossible to locate the corresponding originals on my computer. (OK, I suppose I could have wasted a few days or weeks visually scanning the contents of multiple image folders, but...) I've been waiting for DW to implement image hosting and this first sign of it is so encouraging, but if the system could refrain from changing my file names it would be just perfect!
