It seems to me that knowing the "name" would increase accessibility, because the person's username is already present
If you're on a screenreader, usernames are printed later in the flow of things. Userpics come first so you get to know who posted entries/comments sooner if usernames are in the description field.
That really doesn't seem that unbearably long even for a person who must fill out every bit of space they have...
50 characters isn't long when it provides useful info; as Denise explained above, the name field is used in many different ways including not to display any kind of 'name'.
