The cross-site reading facility is/was a killer app of the DW project and may still be. While there is much to be said for not letting it hang on, and I do appreciate the willingness to declare "looks like it's impossible for now" as opposed to letting things hang, is there any sense in the concept of enabling the functionality for sites that use (versions of) the LJ codebase except LiveJournal itself, or have owners of other sites that use (versions of) the LJ codebase indicated that they would be likely to react as poorly as the LiveJournal management? Not quite sure how popular the other sites using (versions of) the LJ codebase still are, but there must be more than zero people who would stand to gain for it.
