Back in 2001-2003 I was still using NNTP to read a couple of newsgroups that I'd been in for umpty years and still kept up with. Around that time in one newsgroup a thread popped up decrying the flight of the community to LiveJournal and dedicated forums for the topic. During that discussion one of the more active members pointed out that he was hard of seeing and the screen-reader he uses works MUCH better for NNTP than it did for web-forums.
When hitting refresh on a forum room to get the new posts the screen-reader has to read off all the existing content before getting to the new stuff, which takes a really long time. Where in a newsreader, it's a lot faster to browse to the new stuff, which in turn yields a much less laggy internet experience.
Admittedly I have no idea what the state-of-the-art has produced in the intervening 7+ years, but at least back then, NNTP provided a more accessible community experience.
