I don't see DW as having a more complex interface than LJ. What it does have, in places, is a more flexible interface — and much more importantly, a better security model. If there's one thing I've said at least once every year that I've had my LJ account, it's "I WISH LiveJournal would separate the concept of 'grant $FOO access to my restricted posts' from 'subscribe to $FOO's journal', instead of smushing it all together under 'friend' and bringing along all the associated baggage." And then Dreamwidth came along and did it straight out of the box. WIN.
