Image hosting question - security levels

I cross posted an entry on another DW account I have over to an LJ account last evening. Both entries have minimum security to "private". The entry included some images I'd uploaded to my DW account, which I also set to "private" as well. The entry cross posted beautifully, but of course the images don't show on LJ, which I suspect because the images were set to "private". The reason I didn't set the images to "public" was simply because I want them to be seen by only people of my choosing (in this case - only me).

Now, I notice the links to the image viewing, uploading and managing areas on DW are general links to logged in accounts e.g.: https://www.dreamwidth.org/file/list - rather than to a user's image list specifically. You can basically only access your own images, is that right? Does this mean that images I upload to "public" will only be available and searchable to anyone I share my login credentials with? (Assuming I don't go pasting them into public entries I mean!)
