Yeah, it's a little counter-intuitive to a lot of people, but that "use emotions for keywords, replace the actual icon occasionally" thing was how I-think-it-was-evan used to do it, and he was a very early coder on LJ and therefore could make it work the way he wanted. ;) (brad never bothered switching his icons, so Evan got to make the decisions about them instead!)
