Hi all -- I wanted to post a quick news post to let you know that community imports are now live. There's also some other content inside... down past the cut!

Community Imports

There are a few things you should be aware of before you go ahead and start importing your communities. Most of this has been mentioned in the last news post, but just to reiterate the salient details:

* You must be a maintainer of the community on both sites.

* The imported content will be owned by an OpenID account for the original author. This means that the content is still under the control of the author -- LJ/IJ/etc users can come to DW, log in with their remote account, and manage their content.

* This is temporarily restricted to paid accounts. We will undo this restriction as soon as the import queue has died down -- probably in a week or two?

* We have also temporarily limited comment imports to 100,000 comments. If your community has more than that, the comment import will fail. We will lift this restriction as soon as we're sure that we can handle the additional load. (Better safe than overloaded and slow!)

To initiate an import, you should head on over to the Import Content tool. At the top of the page will be a dropdown showing communities you control. Pick where you would like to import to, and the rest of the process should be pretty simple.

Please let us know if you have any trouble. We'll be watching this news post and the support queue and doing our best to make sure that this is an easy, pleasant experience.

Traffic and Growth

I also want to take a moment and say thank you to all of you for being really patient with us over the past few weeks. We've been really hammered by all of the new traffic and have been rolling out new servers to serve the additional capacity.

We've already added two extra web servers and we currently have an order in for two more database servers with extra RAM and disk space. This is a lot of extra capacity and will help to make sure that we continue to be responsive and grow as our userbase grows.

Some people have expressed concern over our ability to scale with the demand. I'm pretty comfortable saying that we've weathered the increased usage in the past few weeks rather well and I don't see that changing. While there are always unexpected bumps along the way, I can promise to keep everybody informed about exactly what is going on. If you haven't yet, you might want to bookmark our [twitter.com profile] dreamwidth Twitter account. We use it pretty regularly and it's the first place we will go if Dreamwidth is down and we need to let you know what's up.

Farewell 2011!

The end of the year (according to the calendar I use, anyway) is here. In a few days it will be 2012. I don't know what the future holds, but I'm really excited to see it.

Thank you for being a part of Dreamwidth. We look forward to making this place even better for you!

AWWWWWWWWYEAH!

I believe that I speak for almost the entire LJ==>Dreamwidth migrant RP community when I say thank you guys so much! I know I for one will be importing my musebox once this goes live for unpaid accounts. You've all worked so hard, and been so kind! I am going to miss LJ (I kinda grew up there. almost literally, when I think about it, I've been there since about 2004...) but I think I'm going to be happy here. :)

Okay, this is kind of an off topic question, but I've been lurking around the very edges/fringes of RPville for ages, and I have been curious forever: what's a musebox and how does it differ from a RP game?

</dumb question>

Okay so, an official RP game generally has some sort of overarching plot, ranging from completely ridiculous (a la "You are all randomly at summer camp," "You are all on a magical island made of candy," "You are all trolling the internet, yes even you fine gents from Westeros who are all WHAT AM COMPUTER") to the deadly serious ("you are all expected to attain gnosis" "you are trapped in a floating non euclidian hellship" "the fate of the universe rests on your shoulders"). Even those that don't usually have some sort of tied in setting. you also usually have to apply, and there's usually a team of mods, and a lot of players. This is sort of like your weekly DnD group.

A "musebox" is a place owned by usually just one or only a very small group of players, with no real plot where people can just hash out whatever the hell kinds of scenes they want without regard for any sort of meta-narrative save the ones they come up with. For example, in my personal musebox, I for a while had about three different threads my friends and I would play in, before we got bored and moved on to other things. There's no obligations, or activity requirements, just you doing what you want. Sort of like your toybox, except instead of toys, you have your RP muses.

so TL;DR -- games are like your weekly DnD group (there's a GM, organized structure, etc), whilst museboxes are "you dicking around with your action figures with a few friends"

hopefully that... made sense?

Oh my gosh, you've just explained pretty much every single bit of confusion I've ever had about the whole 'muses' and RP community, ever. XD

This was an absurdly informative comment! :D

...Okay, I'm going to be shameless here! Seeing how friendly you are and willing to explain RP terms, could you tell me what a dressing room is? It sounds like it's another space for characters to interact in... is it like a cross between a RP game and a musebox?

Interrupting here o/

I consider it as one, yes! Like a musebox, there is no activity requirement and no application required; like a RP game, it takes place (usually) in a set location and is opened to the public.

It can vary depending on the community, but yes, it's a place to try out new characters. Some are multi-fandom, others are restricted to one fandom (like Bleach or Supernatural). There are no apps, and mod involvement is usually minimal... mods are there more to keep things running smoothly and keep players in line than to decide who can and can't play there, or guide players through a big metaplot. Some DRs have no plots at all, some have small plots now and then, some have prompts or events posted by mods.

This is the best explanation of these two things that I have ever seen. I may have to steal it if the occasion ever arises. I shall duly credit 'this awesome person over on DW.' ;)

I wish there was a way to add a comment to the Memories section. Thanks for the explanation - I tried looking for one through Google, and nowhere did it have one that was helpful at all. This one's perfect. :)

/different person, but...

A musebox is a private comm that one or two people run, and only their characters and their friends' characters that they've invite play there; people usually use them for private storylines that are separate from an actual game. A full game is a lot bigger and has a lot more structure to it.

--ACK I WAS BEATEN TO IT oh well XD

Hee, don't worry, the more answers the merrier! Thank you, that makes a lot more things make sense now. (I'd kind of gotten it from context, but it's nice to know that I was right!)

Adding to the museboxes!

Some people also use them to store information as well as roleplay. Such as, they'll post applications for games, or extra information such as TL:DR's about certain aspects, memes about their characters and other various fun things. It depends on the type of musebox and the person who runs it. For example, I have a private one where I dump information or do private threads with people. Then I share one with a friend and we practice or mess around together o/

The term CDJ (character development journal) has never been very popular on LJ the way it is on IJ. Yeah, some people on LJ also use their museboxes as CDJs, or at least to post apps for games that will let you app with a link to an entry with an app, instead of making you post the entire app in a series of comments.
