Hi all -- I wanted to post a quick news post to let you know that community imports are now live. There's also some other content inside... down past the cut!

Community Imports

There are a few things you should be aware of before you go ahead and start importing your communities. Most of this has been mentioned in the last news post, but just to reiterate the salient details:

* You must be a maintainer of the community on both sites.

* The imported content will be owned by an OpenID account for the original author. This means that the content is still under the control of the author -- LJ/IJ/etc users can come to DW, log in with their remote account, and manage their content.

* This is temporarily restricted to paid accounts. We will undo this restriction as soon as the import queue has died down -- probably in a week or two?

* We have also temporarily limited comment imports to 100,000 comments. If your community has more than that, the comment import will fail. We will lift this restriction as soon as we're sure that we can handle the additional load. (Better safe than overloaded and slow!)

To initiate an import, you should head on over to the Import Content tool. At the top of the page will be a dropdown showing communities you control. Pick where you would like to import to, and the rest of the process should be pretty simple.

Please let us know if you have any trouble. We'll be watching this news post and the support queue and doing our best to make sure that this is an easy, pleasant experience.

Traffic and Growth

I also want to take a moment and say thank you to all of you for being really patient with us over the past few weeks. We've been really hammered by all of the new traffic and have been rolling out new servers to serve the additional capacity.

We've already added two extra web servers and we currently have an order in for two more database servers with extra RAM and disk space. This is a lot of extra capacity and will help to make sure that we continue to be responsive and grow as our userbase grows.

Some people have expressed concern over our ability to scale with the demand. I'm pretty comfortable saying that we've weathered the increased usage in the past few weeks rather well and I don't see that changing. While there are always unexpected bumps along the way, I can promise to keep everybody informed about exactly what is going on. If you haven't yet, you might want to bookmark our [twitter.com profile] dreamwidth Twitter account. We use it pretty regularly and it's the first place we will go if Dreamwidth is down and we need to let you know what's up.

Farewell 2011!

The end of the year (according to the calendar I use, anyway) is here. In a few days it will be 2012. I don't know what the future holds, but I'm really excited to see it.

Thank you for being a part of Dreamwidth. We look forward to making this place even better for you!

I just imported a community with 20K entries without a hitch. You're awesome. I didn't try comments yet, but I'm sure once huge amounts of comments are allowed that will work awesomely too.

Okay, I can't get to my reading list page? When I try it takes me to the 'discretion advised' like I was logged out and won't even go when I click the "Yes, I want to view this content" button.

So, I can't get to my reading page at ALL, though I can get to individual journals and can get to a few individual entries. I dunno how to fix this, or if it's a bug or just something wacky with my computer. Help?

I'm not having any problems seeing your reading page -- try hard-refreshing your browser, or clear your cache, and see if that works?

My first community import is in the queue. One thing I noticed is that if I click the refresh link on the Import Status when the screen comes up again it's defaulted back to my DW user account, not the community I was importing so I have to choose it again from the drop-down and click Switch.

So glad you're doing this though - perfect timing!

If you just refresh the page using the browser button instead of the in-built refresh on the import page, it keeps you viewing the community you're importing :) If that makes sense.

To Community Mods & Owners Porting Over Here from LJ:

I just received a rather scathing email from a member of one of my communities for porting the comm's content over from Livejournal without letting the membership know in advance that this was the plan. They wanted the warning so that they could have the time to delete their entries from my writing prompt community, [community profile] writers_muses.

I agree, I probably should have done this, and given the users that option. Their concern was the possibility (in their minds) that I was trying to increase the marketing of DW or try to pull something over with their content. Neither was the case. I now will be deleting anyone's work who objected to the move from LJ to DW because I firmly believe that every writer should have sole control over their work. My biggest concern was moving the 135 different prompt sets from the old site to this one.

So, if you have a sizeable community with a large number of posts (like we did) it might be a good idea to just give folks a head up, in case there are any objections.

Just an FYI that might be helpful for some.

Do your members know that they can edit their entries here if they want to? The way I understand it -and if I got it wrong, I'm sure someone will chip in and correct me- original posters have TOTAL access to the content they've written and that was imported here. They just have to log in using their Open-id and do whatever they want to their entries.

It's possible your members were angry cos you didn't warn them about the migration before going through with it, but it's also possible that they reacted the way they did just because they didn't know they still retain control over their content.

I have a question now that this new tool has been implemented, but sorry if it's already been asked before. :( I skimmed over this entry's comments quickly and didn't see anything.

I was wondering if there were still plans to be able to link an OpenID to your DW account?

That aside, I'm thrilled about the feature. Thanks for all your hard work.

edit: Similarly, I thought I heard rumors of a feature that would let you turn other accounts into subjournals of your main account. Did my brain just make that up or is that a real plan?

This transition has been great for me. I haven't noticed too much slowing down on DW, and you staff peeps are handling it all brilliantly, from the warm welcome to the smart handling of extra servers, and all those lovely DW bits in between.

DW really deserves to grow and flourish from here. For what it's worth, I'm so happy to be here now, happy to support the site with paid accounts (which I already have) and happy to pimp the site (responsibly and considerately, obv.) everywhere I go. :D

So much win. <3

I've been trying to sift through the comments here but dial-up makes it hard! :) So apologies if this has been asked and answered before: can you import more than one community at one time? I have three and just started the import on one just a few minutes ago. Or must I wait until that import is finished before starting the second comm?

All my comms are very light traffic and don't have anywhere near 100,000 comments, I assure you! :)

Finally, THANK YOU so much for this wonderful tool! :)

I have been here for over two and a half years, I don't own/run/mod any communities, I'm not a backend-type person at all, and I'm still pleasantly surprised with each news post, with each new item that I never even knew existed, and certainly never knew I needed in my life but am always so thrilled to discover. Even when there's nothing shiny to report, or the shiny things don't necessarily mean a lot to me personally - y'all are so great; I really think the Dreamwidth team probably farts sparkles.

I am so incredibly pleased to support something like this, and intend to continue. Just had to share. ♥

This might be... a really stupid question, but I will ask it anyway, because I haven't been able to find the answer.

When I imported my journal, some of the comments from other people had icons, and some did not. Now that I've imported a couple of sandbox communities, none of the entries or comments have any icons. Is this intentional? Am I doing something wrong? Is there a way to fix it?

I don't mind it in my journal so much (though it would be awesome to see them), but the communities are used for roleplaying, and the icons really help in some cases.

The problem with icons is that a) comments are imported as having come from the account on LJ, and OpenID accounts can't have as many icons on DW as they have on LJ; b) icons aren't part of the community posts/comments, they're something that belongs to the account itself, so they don't come over as part of the automated data file we use to import from (which only contains data that was posted into the community itself).

Which means that, unfortunately, that the only way icons will display is if the person who posted the entry or comment uploads an icon that's keyworded the same way to their OpenID account. We have plans to make it so that you can "claim" your imported content with your DW-native account, at which point I think comments and entries will show with the right icons, but I can't be 100% positive.

Thank you for all the awesome work you are doing here. I have been a member for awhile and intend to stay so. I am glad to see more people coming over now.

Question! When community imports for larger communities are opened up, what will the tag limit be for those communities? And if it is small, is there a way to increase said limit?

Thank you for your time!

The tag limits for communities are the same as for personal accounts (listed in What are the extra services available?) -- 1000 tags for a free account, 1500 tags for a paid account, 2000 tags for a premium account. For some high-traffic, high-usage communities that top out the premium account level, we can flip a backend flag that will raise that number to 4000, but we have to be careful about how many journals/communities we do that for, because the more tags that a journal has, the more it's likely to overload the site as a whole. (And we can't actually raise the number any further than 4k tags -- there's an actual hard database limit involved.) It all has to do with the way tags are related to entries, and how you can query a tag and get the entries associated with it -- it's a pretty 'expensive' calculation.
