Hi all -- I wanted to post a quick news post to let you know that community imports are now live. There's also some other content inside... down past the cut!

Community Imports

There are a few things you should be aware of before you go ahead and start importing your communities. Most of this has been mentioned in the last news post, but just to reiterate the salient details:

* You must be a maintainer of the community on both sites.

* The imported content will be owned by an OpenID account for the original author. This means that the content is still under the control of the author -- LJ/IJ/etc users can come to DW, log in with their remote account, and manage their content.

* This is temporarily restricted to paid accounts. We will undo this restriction as soon as the import queue has died down -- probably in a week or two?

* We have also temporarily limited comment imports to 100,000 comments. If your community has more than that, the comment import will fail. We will lift this restriction as soon as we're sure that we can handle the additional load. (Better safe than overloaded and slow!)

To initiate an import, you should head on over to the Import Content tool. At the top of the page will be a dropdown showing communities you control. Pick where you would like to import to, and the rest of the process should be pretty simple.

Please let us know if you have any trouble. We'll be watching this news post and the support queue and doing our best to make sure that this is an easy, pleasant experience.

Traffic and Growth

I also want to take a moment and say thank you to all of you for being really patient with us over the past few weeks. We've been really hammered by all of the new traffic and have been rolling out new servers to serve the additional capacity.

We've already added two extra web servers and we currently have an order in for two more database servers with extra RAM and disk space. This is a lot of extra capacity and will help to make sure that we continue to be responsive and grow as our userbase grows.

Some people have expressed concern over our ability to scale with the demand. I'm pretty comfortable saying that we've weathered the increased usage in the past few weeks rather well and I don't see that changing. While there are always unexpected bumps along the way, I can promise to keep everybody informed about exactly what is going on. If you haven't yet, you might want to bookmark our [twitter.com profile] dreamwidth Twitter account. We use it pretty regularly and it's the first place we will go if Dreamwidth is down and we need to let you know what's up.

Farewell 2011!

The end of the year (according to the calendar I use, anyway) is here. In a few days it will be 2012. I don't know what the future holds, but I'm really excited to see it.

Thank you for being a part of Dreamwidth. We look forward to making this place even better for you!

Thank you all for your hard work keeping Dreamwidth running as smoothly as possible.

I have a question: Are we able to crosspost to communities on sites such as Lj? If not when do you expect this feature to be available? [a rough guess is fine :o)]

*waves back a page or two* The ability to crosspost to communities will take back-end work, I believe was said, and they don't have a near-term date on when that might happen. It's apparently technically complicated. Darnit.

I can't tell you how much I appreciate all the hard work you guys put into this site. It's so refreshing to be given new features we need pretty much as soon as programming time allows, and I love that you always seem to be around to answer all our ridiculous questions, [staff profile] denise. I've moved over to dreamwidth almost 100% now, I'm just waiting on my games to finish polling and working out logistics.

I just imported my musebox over -- it's taking some time in the queue, longer than my RP journals did, but I still couldn't be happier. I'm having a soda, playing with icons, and waiting patiently. :)

Just one question, and there's no rush; I hear rumors of icon packages. Any ideas yet what these will look like? At least one of my characters is very expressive, but I don't need many other bells and whistles for his account. Just icons. Sorry if you've answered this before!

HI just a quick question and an observation from the beta stuff:

1. that when trying to import icons from an account that was not paid on lj, it only uploaded the 15 active icons rather than the whole shebang, is that normal behavior?

2. just a note on the beta browser, i'm not sure where else to put this but i noticed that on accounts that have more than 100 icons the beta browser did not load whatsoever, but anything with 100 or below it worked for me. that's all c:

thank youuu

1. That sounds right. Basically, we can only import the icons that you see on the data page... here:

http://xb95.livejournal.com/data/userpics

(Except replace 'xb95' with your LJ username. Any icons you see on that page should have been imported to DW... if not, let me know!)

2. I'm not sure. I'll flag down [staff profile] fu and see if she can answer this!

Error message

[personal profile] xdawnfirex
2011-12-30 07:07 am UTC (link)
Imported two comms: [community profile] mafialair and [community profile] ncis_fic. Received several of the following error message:

"Failure running job: Undefined subroutine &LWP::Debug::debug called at /usr/share/perl5/LWPx/ParanoidAgent.pm line 377."

This came with subject lines like "Your bio/usericons has failed to import and will not be retried."

The bio error seems to be for ncis_fic, and oddly enough the bio seems to be there. The usericons one seems to be for mafialair, for which apparently the usericons did not port.

Hope this is helpful; please let me know if you need any other info. :)

(Oh, btw, the imports are not done; both are queued for entries. IDK if that makes a difference or not. Some of the ncis_fic entries have ported, but none of mafialair's have made it to the top of the queue yet.)

There was some excitement earlier with that LWP error. It's been corrected and so that's why the bio is through now -- it worked eventually, it had just failed a few times. (And very excitedly let you know.)

error

[personal profile] el_presidente
2011-12-30 07:51 am UTC (link)
someone probably already posted this but I keep getting the error

Failure running job: Undefined subroutine &LWP::Debug::debug called at /usr/share/perl5/LWPx/ParanoidAgent.pm line 377.

((Why do I keep reading that as Paranoia Agent? I'm going to hum that catchy opening song.))

Edit: It also says fail to import and will not be retried (after 3 attempts). Maybe raise that?

Also, once importing is done, will users subscribed get an influx of entries?

I think Mark explains why you got this error message here.

Also, once importing is done, will users subscribed get an influx of entries?

Nope. Imported entries aren't displayed on Reading page precisely to avoid flooding subscribers. :)

First of all, happy new year and A+ on being so readily available during such a huge migration! It's crazy!

Also, I think I brought this up years ago when I first saw DW, but just because I'm still curious; Will there ever be an option to have the hover text show an account's given name instead of their username, in front of keywords? I get involuntarily OCD about certain things, and for years on LJ it was people not filling out the given name field. On DW this is the standard unless I go to their profiles, and it nags at me incessantly. Besides that it also tells me who characters are in RP when I see them in threads, without having to go through their icons/profiles.

It's a small and very useful detail that would really just clinch how great this site is, were it an option.

Uh, I don't quite understand the remote account thing for imported communities. Does that mean I have to log in separately or with my lj account if I say want to edit a post?

Also, does this mean unless I have a paid account I can't import my comm for another two weeks? I do kind of understand you give paid users priority, but please also keep in mind that other people also have comms on lj who are in huge danger of dying and members abandoning ship unless the comm moves to dw.

As far as I can tell, entries are imported attached to an OpenID account with the username of the original poster, which should be able to be logged into like so.

And the restricted-to-paid thing is a temporary safety measure until they're sure their servers can handle the load. Personally I'd rather wait a week or two than have DW blow up because everyone and their mom with a free account is trying to import their comm. XD;
