It's that time of year again -- the calendar year is drawing to a close, the end-of-year holidays are nearly upon us, and Dreamwidth would like to say "thank you" to everyone who decides to give their friends (or themselves) a holiday gift of DW paid time.

From now until the end of December, all orders made in the Dreamwidth Shop will receive a 10% points bonus for future use. For instance, if you buy yourself a 12 month paid account (350 points), we'll give you 35 points to spend later when you complete your order.

This is our way of saying "thank you!" to everyone who helps to support Dreamwidth, and helps us to continue being independent, user-supported, and ad-free. Our commitment to remaining free of fiscal pressure from outside interests and 100% devoted to providing our users the best service possible is only possible because of you, and we'd like to thank everyone who supports us.

Happy holidays from Dreamwidth!

This is an awesome opportunity! Thank you :)

If you're buying the paid time as a gift, do they get the bonus? Obviously I don't have much use for bonus points having a seed account

You get the bonus yourself, but you can then go to the points transfer page and send them to somebody. (Or use them to buy people gifts later!)

What is the status of virtual gifts? I have a permanent account, so I don't often buy points, but I might give virtual gifts a lot.

The backend code is about, oh, 70% done from the last update I have been given! Like so many other things (*sigh*) we needed to do a lot of backend work first to make it work out properly.

it is correct! once you register an account, it's yours for good, even if you never touch it again. We will transfer ownership of a community, under certain circumstances, but personal accounts are always "once registered always yours".

You're quite welcome and DW is well worth supporting on behalf of myself and to help keep DW commercial-free for all DW users. Oh, yes. Very important.

Please stay independent of the commercial interests. I have seen it year after year that each successive buyout or takeover ends worse than the previous.

Voluntary support is by far, the best business model for the Internet; much more so that covert aggregation and dissemination of user information, pop-up or banner advertising.

I can do without the bells, gimmicks and whistles for clean base code that's kept updated and maintained and I'm more than happy to help pay my fair share of the cost of keeping it so.

Happy Holidays to you, Ms. D and all the gang at Dreamwidth!

Oh well, DW is worth supporting, and I'd do it with or without the incentives. Thank you for being. :)

Although I wish, wish, wish that LJ-import would work. I tried again after the announcement it was fixed, and no luck yet.

Hee, it never fails, does it?

LJ has been under DDoS lately, so a lot of imports are failing (if we can't reach the site at the time the import tries). It seems to have cleared up mostly, so you might want to try again. If the failure is something else, you'll get an error in your inbox -- if you can't figure out what's going on, ask in Support and they'll help look into it for you!

Question about Migration!

[personal profile] murdering
2011-12-12 11:33 pm UTC (link)
I've been trying to migrate things over and struggling a bit; in the end, I used a python script, but I want to test how it would work if I were to bring over a large community with a large number of comments in entries. Is the migrate system still comment-functional, or is it having issues due to the changes LJ's made recently?

Unfortunately, it's not currently possible to import communities (there are issues around making sure that posters keep the ability to edit/delete their contributed content). But if you wrote a script that will do it for you, it should still work just fine; LJ managed to make their cookie changes backwards-compatable.

Hello!

Dreamwidth has always been my favorite alternative to LJ due to the fast response times, the overall mission and constant updating. There is actually just one thing that would possibly make a few people I know move here, and it's our icons. I would not hesitate to support DW if there was a paid option just for extra user pictures and nothing else. Has this been discussed before?

I really do apologize if this has been asked before. RPers just tend to really, really like their icons (myself included, although I do find it amusing that before I was perfectly contempt with just one on message board. How time flies!)

Thank you so much!

Yes, the ability to buy just icon space (and no additional paid features) is one of the most-requested things, but unfortunately it's just not possible! Icons are the most costly paid feature for us to offer, and allowing people to buy just icons would completely destroy the balance of usage that we rely on to set paid account prices vs usage vs costs -- you can see some further explanations from back in the day if you're curious :)

This is actually...vaguely related to [personal profile] lash's question, but it has more to do with your premium paid option.

Have you guys ever considered being able to buy three months of premium paid time or is it just not cost effective for you guys? (My apologizes if it was already answered using those nifty explanations you linked.

It's not so much that it's not cost effective, as we wanted to reduce the chance of "decision fatigue" -- the more options you offer people in a shop/payment workflow, the more chance you're going going to confuse and overload them and they won't know what to do. (Every option you can remove helps your workflow considerably! That's why our shop is so simple.) So we figured that since premium paid time was the "luxury" option, it would be okay to only offer it at the higher price points/longer periods.
