State of the Journal Import

As we invite more and more people to come join our closed beta, we're seeing more and more people trying to import their journals from another LJ-based site!

This also means that wait times for the contents of your account to import may be longer, especially if you have more stuff in your account on that other site. We're also seeing some common problems, and so I thought I would make an entry to cover some of them:

1. If you'd like your imported entries to retain the same userpics they had on the other site, first go to the Beta page and set your account to a Premium Paid or Seed Account. This is temporary, and we'll reset them all before the end of closed beta; however, it will mean you have enough icon slots available. If you fail to do this before you run your import, your imported entries will not have the correct userpics. (This is a bug, and we're working on fixing it.)

2. The import page is only a temporary page. It will have a much, much better frontend by the time we launch to open beta, and it will be linked in appropriate places. Resolved! The importer is now here.

3. Currently, if you try to import multiple journals from the same site (two LJ journals, two IJ journals, etc) into a single Dreamwidth account, the importer will catch all of the entries from one journal, and only some or none of the entries from the other journal. (This is a bug, and we're working on fixing it.)

4. Currently, if you try to import multiple journals from different sites (an LJ journal and an IJ journal, etc) into a single Dreamwidth account, the imported comments may appear on the wrong entry. (This is a bug, and we're working on fixing it.)

5. The importer currently does not import your friends, either for your reading page or to populate your access filters. (This means that any custom-locked posts you made will be effectively private: the post will still be locked to the filter you used on the other site, but the filter will be empty, so no one can see it. To give people access to that entry, you'll need to re-add them to the filter on Dreamwidth.) This is an area of the importer that we haven't finished yet.

6. If you've ever used LiveJournal's tool that allows you to change the security of all of your entries at once, your import may not import all of your entries. This is due to a combination of the way that the mass-editing tool updates your entries and the way that the LiveJournal protocol returns information about your journal's entries. If you're affected by this, you can open up a support request (as described below) and as soon as we implement a workaround, we'll make sure to let you know.

7. A note: if you've used the Privacy tab of the Manage Settings page to set a default entry security level that's more restrictive than the security level on the entry you're importing from the other site, the entry will import using your Dreamwidth security level, not the security level on the other site. If you've set a default entry security level that's less restrictive than the security level on the entry you're importing, it will use the security on the other site's entry. (This may be a bit confusing, so, an example: if your default entry security on Dreamwidth is Private, and you import an entry that was Public on LJ, the entry posted to Dreamwidth will be Private. If your default entry security on Dreamwidth is Public, and you import an entry that was Private on LJ, the entry posted to Dreamwidth will be Private.) This is actually not a bug, it's a feature: if you want to, you can set your new entry security to Private, then run the importer, and all of your old entries will be imported as Private entries visible only to you, allowing you to keep your history while still offering a fresh start to your readers.

After reading all of this, if you're still having problems with your import -- if the jobs appear to be stuck or not moving after a full day, if you think the importer is not picking up entries or comments, or if you receive error messages (other than an error message about your userpics import failing -- if you get that, see #1), you can open a support request in the Importer category. This is the only thing we are using the support board for right now -- please continue to report other problems and/or feature requests in comments to [site community profile] dw_news or by contacting [personal profile] domtheknight.

If you open a support request for a problem with the importer, please give as much detail as you can about the problem you're experiencing: what you expected to happen, what actually happened, what seems to be missing, what error messages you're getting, or anything else that seems to be applicable. The more information you can give us, the faster [staff profile] mark can look into it for you.

I love the fact that you can import your entries. My journal dates back to 2001 and trying to copy, paste and repost is just too much.

Keep up the great work!!

the importer will catch all of the entries from one journal, and only some or none of the entries from the other journal

Yeah, it handled my (first-up) LJ import just fine, but didn't grab any of my Journalfen entries older than 2007, despite, seemingly, reporting that All Went Well. Thanks for the heads-up.

the entry will import using your Dreamwidth security level

FYI: The entries I imported yesterday have retained their original privacy setting, despite my DW journal default being set to My Eyes Only. Open, flocked, and private flists are still, respectively, open, flocked, and private. I double-checked by logging in as my Open ID — could only see the correct unlocked entries — then by giving my Open ID access — could now see flocked posts, too. :: shrug ::

I'm really impressed with the ease of DW's import, finicky or not. :D

Thanks for this!

Could the problems I had (not importing comments, not importing posts with polls in them) have been due to not having a Premium Paid or Seed account? If so, should I try it again now that I've switched, or will that not work?

I did as you instructed in #1 - set myself to a Seed account - and the import pulled over my entries, but only my current default icon from LJ. It did not import any of the rest of my userpics.

This may be because as a permanent LJ account holder, I already have more icons than Dreamwidth will be giving out to even its Seed accounts? The cap is currently at 150, whereas I have around 185 of 197 total slots currently filled at LJ.

Also, it changed my default icon from the one I originally set up here, to the default icon that was imported from LJ. I have since changed it back.

Is it (or will it be) possible to import by tag? I don't think I want to import my *entire* LJ, but I do want to import everything tagged "fic", for instance. I won't be a *huge* amount of work to do manually, because I'm not that prolific, but it would also be cool if it could happen automatically. :D

In the future, will the importer be able to import communities?

[identity profile] tellitslant.livejournal.com 2009-04-09 07:01 pm (UTC)(link)
I was thinking about this myself. It seems like it would be a nice thing, but I wonder if there would be issues with comms whose users aren't all on DW - there would be empty links, there could be permissions questions, etc. (I was also thinking it would be nice if the mod of a comm could set automatic cross-posting for all entries, but that also hits the same issues.)

Anyways, that's just what I thought of, so I too would love to hear from someone official on this!

Apologies if this has been mentioned already, but I was just poking around in my account settings and saw something that's been driving me NUTS on LJ is currently the same here.

In the Account Settings - Notifications option, the Inbox notification is default for "when someone comments in my journal on any entry." There's no way to get the notification by email only and NOT in the inbox. Is there a way to change that so we can choose to get notifications either by email only, by inbox only, or both? (I notice that the "when someone replies to any comment I make" option is not available by Inbox - this would be my preference for all comment notifications, but I realize some people might actually use their inboxes. *g*)

I'm a dork, and started my import before changing to a seed account. Ah, well! I'll yip if anything other than icons goes wrong, though entries look all right. (It did only take the default icon, not the first six.)

Suggestion: I love the •Create •Organize •Read •Explore menu! But I did expect the first item under "Read" to be "Journal" or "Recent entries". I know you can get your journal by clicking your name in the upper right hand corner, but when it says "Read" right there ....

(Also: OMG thank you! And, EEEeeeeeeeee! :-)

Hi! Your blog on LJ said to tell you about this here, so I hope I am not duplicating the bug ... if I am, appologies! (I checked the "known issues" page and did not find it there...) - And I am not here to complain or anything, but reporting because it might help. It all worked now and I am happy etc, so ... but, here's what happened:

It worked now, but the first couple of times I tried to log in with my open ID account (the part where I confirm that I want Dreamwidth to have access to my LJ open_id name thingy, and get sent back here after agreeing to let you people see my details), instead of the "set email" page I got an error message saying "unexpected_url_redirect".

Also, the validate email address email has a blank subject line and ended up in my spam folder.

Reporting other problem:

[personal profile] wetdryvac 2009-04-11 06:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Reporting other problem:

On the custom moods editing page: http://www.dreamwidth.org/manage/moodthemes.bml

In building a set of moods icons, the check box for inherit sometimes gets rechecked post save, overwriting edits to items which could but should not be inheriting icons.

Example:

Angry: http://www.wetdryvac.net/WDVmoods/angry.jpg
(inherit unchecked) Annoyed: http://www.wetdryvac.net/WDVmoods/annoyed.jpg
(inherit unchecked) Aggravated: http://www.wetdryvac.net/WDVmoods/aggravated.jpg

Becomes, post save:

Angry: http://www.wetdryvac.net/WDVmoods/angry.jpg
(inherit checked) Annoyed: http://www.wetdryvac.net/WDVmoods/angry.jpg
(inherit checked) Aggravated: http://www.wetdryvac.net/WDVmoods/angry.jpg

This does not appear to happen consistently and seems potentially to be a result of the script on the page not having successfully pulled an image.

Additionally, when an image is set, if the old image was at X wide by Y high and a change is made to the image in the text field for it, the script updates the wide/high to 0/0 until it loads the image from the link entered in the text field.

It would potentially be more convenient if that text field were left as it was pre-edit until image was loaded, since many users set a standard mood icon size, and going back to update image locations (change of hosting company, change of image name, etc) takes that from a rapid copy paste activity to non-rapid copy/paste, manually enter image size where needed.

Additionally, this would solve for an image set which hasn't completed uploading, a down host on the far end, and so forth, as well as other non-DW hosted item load-time/reliance issues.

*checks LiveJournal*

Looks like I can duplicate this problem on LiveJournal, so there's a good chance that this is a common-code issue, and a potential place to exceed LJ's capabilities.

Hello, I just started a Dreamwidth account and found that you recently added new style options. I switched to "Zesty White" and am discovering that the options for choosing the display colors for user names on the Reading Page do not show up or work in that style. Wondering if that's a style choice or a bug. Also, not sure if this is where I should be commenting about this. Is there a more general area for possible bug reporting?

Thanks so much for your time/work!

I imported pretty much successfully, it looks like the only thing that didn't import were embedded videos. (well, that and my css in my bio borked my profile page a bit, but I'm pretty sure that's my css' fault, not the importer's.)

Basically, the importer seems to have stripped out all the code between the lj embed tags.

I imported, and it worked beautifully, except it didn't get any of my comments from LJ or IJ. So I imported LJ with comments only, then IJ with comments only. The IJ comments are still processing, but I've got duplicates of all my entries, and my suspicion is that the LJ comments will be on one copy, and the IJ comments on the other. I wanted to see if all the comments would go to a single entry, since none of them are associated with DW accounts, but it doesn't look like that'll be the case. Just thought I'd put this here in case anyone else tries the same thing, so they know what to possibly expect. Now I need to decide what I want to do with those duplicates, but I'm waiting until the comments finish processing.

Question about friends

[personal profile] amalthia 2009-04-12 03:00 am (UTC)(link)
Before I try an import there was this option to import friendsgroups? or friends...I'm assuming this means it'll import your flist but I'm not sure how that'll work on DW. Does DW read their posts when they post to LJ or JF? or do they have to join DW with the same account name they have in LJ for their posts to be readable at DW?

Sorry if that doesn't make sense. I was thinking of importing my profile from LJ because that's where my biggest watch list is located but there are friends on IJ and JF that don't post on LJ and I wanted to add them as well...but some of them are joining DW and I'm not sure how this works.
