Weekly Update: 2 December 2010

Hullo, Dreamwidth! And a quick thanks to [staff profile] fu for taking last week's update out of sequence -- [personal profile] sarah and I were closing on our new house and doing all the important grownup things. (I still do not know how they thought I was enough of a grownup to be allowed to buy a house.) I pause in our shaving-down of hardwood floors (long story) and painting of walls and removing of wallpaper and scrubbing of all the things to write you an update.

...It may be a little less coherent than usual. *g*

Behind the cut:

* Development
* Code Pushed
* Holiday Promo
* Email Delivery
* Community Awesomeness

Development

This week's code tour, done by first-timer [personal profile] john (in typical [personal profile] john style, which is to say, fabulous) covers this week's development work. It was mostly backend stuff -- which is to say, stuff you won't notice unless we screwed it up horribly oops i shouldn't even think that. Anyway.

The big thing you may notice in this week's code tour: we've changed the way we handle unknown text encoding so that if you have an entry you couldn't edit because of a text encoding mismatch, you will now be able to edit it. The unknown encoding characters will still display as ?, and you'll have to change them when you edit the entry, but at least they will be editable! This mostly happens if you're using an old desktop client that isn't UTF-8 aware, or if you're using some autoposting methods (the one we particularly know of is the utility to autopost from Delicious), and if you use things like accented characters, characters in alphabets other than Latin, or "smart quotes" or other formatting characters.

All of these changes are live ...

Code Pushed

...because [staff profile] fu did a code push yesterday. We had one reported problem, with some settings in a few styles turning certain text transparent, which was then fixed.

The following code tours contain all the things that are now live on the site:

(the rest of) 2010-11-10 to 2010-11-18
2010-11-18 to 2010-11-25
2010-11-26 to 2010-12-01

In addition to the above, this includes such awesomeness as:

* 17 new themes for making your journal pretty.

* 2 code merges from LiveJournal: support for the "?poster=username" URL option to show all posts by 'username' in communities, and backend support for filtering a journal/community by multiple tags (things tagged foo AND bar, or things tagged foo or things tagged bar, together.) Neither of these has a user-facing frontend yet, but we will add them!

* Using the next/previous links to navigate through a journal/comm's contents will remember your formatting options (?style=mine, ?style=light, ?style=site).

* Accessibility fix: add blank alt text to images that are only used for layout or spacing, since those images contain no useful information and just waste time for screenreader users to listen to.

* Fixes to the Gradation site skin for some unreadable text in the community admin area and the Celerity site skin for unreadable buttons in the Customize Journal area.

* Adding a link to buy people gifts in the DW shop to birthday notification emails.

* A fix for that annoying bug where people would get multiple (in some cases up to 200 plus!) emails for notifications of poll votes. (It's now safe to resubscribe to that notification, if you were one of the affected people.)

* If you're a community admin of a moderated community and, like me, are annoyed by the fact that you always post unmoderated no matter what instead of your entries going into the moderation queue for later dispatch, fear not: from now on, all you have to do is uncheck the 'unmoderated posting' setting for your account, and your posts will go into the queue instead of being auto-approved. (To keep the existing behavior, leave the box checked.)

Holiday Promo

Our end-of-year holiday promo is now active: for the month of December, all orders will receive a 10% points bonus. So, if you make an order and wonder where that extra 10% came from, it's our holiday gift to you!

Email Delivery

We are yet again having problems with certain email providers not accepting mail from us. [personal profile] alierak, our hardworking Backup Sysadmin, has been working on resolving the problem, but in the meantime, if you're a user of the following email providers:

* lmi.net
* email.de
* web.de

...and probably several others, you will likely not be receiving email from us right now, and haven't been for a day or two. This problem isn't on our end -- we're sending out the email; your providers are just refusing to accept it. We're working with them, but you may also want to contact them and let them know that they're refusing to accept legitimate email.

Community Awesomeness

Very short community awesomeness section this week, since I don't have time to go through and do the usual building-of-lists! Still, some links to awesome things our users have done, built, made, written, created, or otherwise caused to come into being:

* Alex Whisman's Bookstore, containing beautiful books of photography;

* Lake of Two Mountains photograph by wahiaronkwas david from the DW Users Flickr pool (open membership!)

* katieintheworld's Shark Mitts (Ravelry login required) from the Ravelry Dreamwidth Knitters group

* Also, two weeks ago I featured Voske's Skwoyls mittens as a Ravelry link. You can see a public picture of the project this week if you don't have a Ravelry account.

As a reminder, I'm perpetually collecting links to publicly available-for-sale creative works and craft/artisan work from DW users. Your chance to get your name in lights, or at least in the weekly news update! I will even get my act together and get the lists out of the comments and into the posts one of these days ... probably shortly after I get all my books into boxes and all my bathroom under-sink cabinet packed up.

*

That's it for us for another week! As always, if you're having problems with Dreamwidth, Support can help you; for notices of site problems and downtime, check the Twitter status page; if you've got an idea to make the site better, you can make a suggestion.

We'll see you next week for our next update, at which point it will be around 48 hours or so until the nice people with the big truck come to carry off our earthly belongings to bring them to our new abode. I guess this means I should keep packing. As soon as I'm done shaving the floor.

Um... about the emails. My server is web.de AND email.de (it's the same, just two names) and I get my email notifs now. I didn't have to talk with my provider, because before I could do that, all of the delayed notifs arrived at once. So I'm not sure the problem is my provider, because now everything is working fine. *scratches head*

ETA: All right, I spoke too quickly. Notifs have stopped again. And things were so good for two days. *sighs*

Me again! :)
I just talked to my provider on the phone. He told me you're indeed on the reject list and he said the administrator of Dreamwidth should go to this site: http://freemail.web.de/reject2 and fill out the formular there (it's in English) and you're on again, in web.de and email.de. A YAY! for German bureaucracy. *facepalm*

Thanks, I saw that page, but I can't find a removal form or contact form in English.

ETA, after trying Yahoo / Babelfish translation of the form:

Can anyone clarify what they're asking for with "Ihre Antwort-E-Mail-Adresse:"? Is that the sender or the recipient address that we're having trouble with, or my contact address as an administrator?

And, is "Betreff:" asking for a subject?

How about "Vergessen Sie bitte nicht, Ihre Kontaktdaten zu senden.", which Yahoo translates as "Do not forget please to send your contact contacts." My what?

Missing emails/ New home!

[personal profile] yvmora71 2010-12-02 19:36 (UTC)(link)
I paid for a gift account for a friend in my circle and was informed that I would get an email to confirm this but I never got a notice from DW and the only way I knew she got the gift account was when she sent me a message thanking me. I've been getting all the other DW notices so I don't know what I did wrong.

(Yay for your new home! I love moving into a new place, painting, decorating, new surroundings. I feel like I'm restarting my life. I actually love unpacking boxes even if it's just my old books. They feel new to me after being boxed for a few weeks. Okay maybe I'm weird like that. I know a lot of people who hate moving and dread schlepping boxes and the mess. I like change.)

Just wanted to say, DW needs a plushy so it can be cuddled.

Possibly silly question, is there a way to see which themes are new?

Also I am slowly bribing my rping friends over here (as I get invites to do so, and because I made a game which I plan on sticking too) and so far so good. The pretty is enticing.

I hate commenting on older posts, but since this seems the to be the most recent post with tag filtering mentioned....

With the multiple tag search we can do "tag1 AND tag2", or "tag1 OR tag2". Could we possibly get "tag1 AND NOT tag2" in the future? I'm looking at a list of over one hundred fics right now and really wishing I could add "NOT wip" to my search to narrow it down to finished fics.
