Update: 2010 November 26

Hi Dreamwidth,

Don't worry, it's not December yet. I've switched slots with [staff profile] denise to give her time to settle into her new home (last I heard, she was settling in quite nicely :-)). That means that the first week of December will be [staff profile] denise's instead of mine. In fact, December will be all [staff profile] denise all the time -- exciting!

Keeping it brief because I'm caught up in some really intensive code cleanup, which I'll need to dive back into as soon as I'm done here. So this week let's talk about:

* code
* community

Code

This week's code tour was done by [personal profile] cxcvi, whose first code tour it is. (Thank you! Mmm code tours, served warm, with just a tinge of snark)

None of those are live right now, but they will be soon. We're planning another code push this weekend. As usual, we'll post about it to [site community profile] dw_maintenance and our Twitter account when we're about to start. The more frequent code pushes are working to spread out the workload and reduce bug scope, both of which I'm in favor.

Things to watch out for:

  • December paid time promotion

  • changes to community moderation: posts by community administrators and moderators will no longer automatically jump the queue. Anyone with the "unmoderated" checkbox will still skip the queue as before.

  • a fix for the multiple poll notification bug (and sorry to everyone who was affected!)

  • the ability to filter entries in a community by adding ?poster=username

  • the ability to select how filtering to multiple tags should behave:
http://exampleusername.dreamwidth.org/tag/embarrasing,cooking will show your embarrassing stories mixed in with your cooking stories
http://exampleusername.dreamwidth.org/tag/embarrasing,cooking?mode=all will show only your embarrassing cooking stories (goodness knows I have more than enough of those! This one time, I was too lazy to use a pan, so I tried to fry an egg in the microwave... ick)

We also have some tiny usability fixes that are going out; you shouldn't notice them except perhaps as relief that $tiny_niggling_thing works more smoothly.

Community

  • [personal profile] sporky_rat is organizing a yarn swap for knitters/crocheters/anyone interested in yarn as fibers :-) Yarn Swap 2010 rules | Yarn Swap 2010 signups. If you love yarn, and mail, and yarn through mail, click on through *G*

  • [staff profile] denise is compiling a list of Dreamwidth user creative works. We've been promoting crafters and artisans, but we haven't set up an equivalent for other creative works. If you've got creative work in any tangible form that's purchaseable by somenoe, comment there with a link and let us know.

  • Speaking of crafters... I have no links this week, but we'll be sure to pick out something good for next week!

Another week, another news post. As always, if you're having problems with Dreamwidth, Support can help you; for notices of site problems and downtime, check the Twitter status page; if you've got an idea to make the site better, you can make a suggestion.

I leave you in [staff profile] denise's hands through the month of December. Have fun, and I hope you all have a great weekend *G*

Ohhhh! I am so excited about filtering by multiple tags! I didn't even know that was coming, but not being able to do so is something that's frustrated me about DW's (and LJ's) tags system for a long time.

Filtering comms by username sounds really handy, too. There have been a lot of times where I've wanted to find a post of mine in a comm and that would have made things so much easier.

Me too!

Oh cool. I crosspost to LJ still, but never actually use my journal there, so I probably would never have noticed the tags. The community search will come in handy there, too, though.

Both of these sound SO COOL.

[personal profile] swaldman 2010-11-26 12:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Me too, but will there be a UI for this? One of my criticisms of LJ, as a very light user, was that too many things that you could do seemed to depend on remembering things to add on to the URL.

There are plans to make a UI now that the backend is in place, yes.

yay :-)

You have kind of a weird sentence? "I've switched slots with [staff profile] denise to give her time to settle into her new home (last I heard, she was [staff profile] denise was settling in quite nicely :-))."

Other than that, this all is good to know and neat!

[personal profile] pne 2010-11-26 07:51 am (UTC)(link)
And I'm sure some people will use "embarrasing" as a tag, but hopefully the correctly-spelled "embarrassing" is more popular :)

You could check which is more popular by checking the http-referrer values in stats for entries tagged with both. :-)

I'm sorry if this is a question you have to answer every month -- I don't usually read comment pages -- but is there an ETA on the new update page? I've been really longing for the ability to save drafts for a while now.

YAY for the poll notification fix! I'll be able to get my poll votes in the mail again, without risking 1000+ messages from one click in a suggestions poll!

Filtering multiple tags, oh man, Christmas so soon? Thank you for that, it's something I've wanted to be able to do for ages.

Unrelated, you know they make special containers for microwaving eggs? They won't come out fried, though - the end result is more a sort of fluffy poached egg. It was my favourite thing as a child.
