Weekly Update: December 14th, 2009
Evening! Did you miss your email last week? Were you sad that we didn't show up in your inbox like normal every Monday? Turns out we had a bug with the job that sends out notifications for an official post and I decided not to go back and mail everybody on Tuesday. Sorry if you missed last week, but you can read it here:
http://dw-news.dreamwidth.org/14833.html
This week, we've got a lot more news and interesting things! Of special note, our Holiday Promotion is now live, and we have released a new feature that should make editing comments easier for people. More styles, bug fixes, and some other things, too.
All of that and more... behind the cut!
We currently have a promotion going for the next two weeks (until the end of the year -- exactly 2010-01-01 00:00:00 UTC). In short, for every 6 months of paid account time you buy for someone else, we give you 2 months of paid time for your account.
To take advantage of this, simply go to the Shop and you can add 6 or 12 months to your cart. You will know if the choice you made is eligible for the promotion because your shopping cart will automatically have a second item, the paid time for you for free.
Here's the precise rules:
* You must purchase 6 months or 12 months of paid time. Buying three separate people 2 months does NOT make you eligible for the promotion.
* The paid time must be purchased as a gift for another account or for a new account. Upgrading/extending your own account is not eligible for the promotion.
* You will be given 2 months free extension on your existing time. Free and paid accounts will be given 2 months of paid account time. Premium paid accounts will be given 2 months of premium paid account time.
* Seed accounts will have to contact us and give us their order number and who they want the 2 months credited to and we will do it for you manually. You can email accounts@dreamwidth.org and we'll help you out.
* Promotion ends when 2010 begins in UTC. This means that it ends at 4PM on December 31st in the Pacific Standard Timezone (PST). 7PM in EST.
denise and I will both be in the fabulous city of Wellington, New Zealand in January. From the 17th through the 24th, actually -- if you are going to be in the area and would like to have some sort of get together, we'd love to meet users or anybody interested in meeting up and hanging out.
Secondly, I will also be in Sydney, Australia starting from the 13th through the 16th. Denise will not be with me, though. Just a few days, but if you're in the area I'd love to get dinner or something. Probably one of the best things for this to work would be for me to find an aspiring local who's willing to organize a little bit on that end... volunteers? :-)
We had NaNoWriMo 2009 up as a feed in the Latest Posts page, but that's passed. We'd like to add a feed for posts about the holidays and for the big Yuletide fandom thing going on.
What I'd like from you all: please help list what tags should be included in the above two feeds. We have a small list but we want to try to include all of the main tags people are using to represent posts about this time of year, so your help is appreciated!
Our documentation and support teams have been working hard to go through all of the on-site documentation and update it. In particular, they've been doing a lot of scrubbing to clean up old things, removing anything that seems to be too confusing, and generally cleaning things up.
If you've been through our FAQs lately or elsewhere on the site and run into anything you felt was confusing, please let us know! We're always looking for feedback on our documentation.
For our support side, we have now set up an email address (support@dreamwidth.org) that you can use to email the support administrators directly. It will open a private support request that can be used for issues that you want to ask about but don't necessarily want to ask publicly about.
In January, we will start doing regular (nightly?) purges of accounts that have been deleted for more than 30 days. This has not been done yet, so if you have a deleted account you want to keep, you might want to go undelete it.
Once an account has been purged, the posts, comments, and other data on that account are permanently removed from the site. We will be unable to retrieve that data for you, so please be sure you only delete accounts you want to be completely removed.
This week has been fairly typical for the last few: 15 bugs resolved. Our code tour this week was put together by the inestimable
dreamatdrew and can be viewed here:
http://dw-dev.dreamwidth.org/32625.html
We also have a tour of the new bugs filed this week as well as some of the oldest bugs that are still outstanding. (Oops, I should get on those...) This tour was put together by
sporky_rat and
zarhooie, thank you both!
http://dw-dev-training.dreamwidth.org/14877.html
Tonight we had a code push, too, to bring live the holiday promotion as well as a few other things that have been patched this week. In particular:
* Editing comments now lets you specify a reason for the edit, which shows up nicely in the footer of the comment.
* Standardized tab order on log in pages for better accessibility of keyboard users.
* Seven new themes! Fixed a few style issues, too.
* Lots of great backend work by
exor674 that, for now, is not doing much visibly. But soon, soon, this will give us the foundation to start modernizing the site in a big way.
Time to sign off. I've covered everything I need to cover (and then some!) and you are now up to date with what Dreamwidth is up to this week. In the coming week, I will be wrapping things up before my Christmas vacation. If it's a little quiet here for the rest of December, that's why!
Fly safe, have fun, see you next week!
