Weekly Update: December 14th, 2009

Evening! Did you miss your email last week? Were you sad that we didn't show up in your inbox like normal every Monday? Turns out we had a bug with the job that sends out notifications for an official post and I decided not to go back and mail everybody on Tuesday. Sorry if you missed last week, but you can read it here:

http://dw-news.dreamwidth.org/14833.html

This week, we've got a lot more news and interesting things! Of special note, our Holiday Promotion is now live, and we have released a new feature that should make editing comments easier for people. More styles, bug fixes, and some other things, too.

All of that and more... behind the cut!

1. Holiday Promotion

We currently have a promotion going for the next two weeks (until the end of the year -- exactly 2010-01-01 00:00:00 UTC). In short, for every 6 months of paid account time you buy for someone else, we give you 2 months of paid time for your account.

To take advantage of this, simply go to the Shop and you can add 6 or 12 months to your cart. You will know if the choice you made is eligible for the promotion because your shopping cart will automatically have a second item, the paid time for you for free.

Here's the precise rules:

* You must purchase 6 months or 12 months of paid time. Buying three separate people 2 months does NOT make you eligible for the promotion.

* The paid time must be purchased as a gift for another account or for a new account. Upgrading/extending your own account is not eligible for the promotion.

* You will be given 2 months free extension on your existing time. Free and paid accounts will be given 2 months of paid account time. Premium paid accounts will be given 2 months of premium paid account time.

* Seed accounts will have to contact us and give us their order number and who they want the 2 months credited to and we will do it for you manually. You can email accounts@dreamwidth.org and we'll help you out.

* Promotion ends when 2010 begins in UTC. This means that it ends at 4PM on December 31st in the Pacific Standard Timezone (PST). 7PM in EST.

2. Visiting NZ and AU!

[staff profile] denise and I will both be in the fabulous city of Wellington, New Zealand in January. From the 17th through the 24th, actually -- if you are going to be in the area and would like to have some sort of get together, we'd love to meet users or anybody interested in meeting up and hanging out.

Secondly, I will also be in Sydney, Australia starting from the 13th through the 16th. Denise will not be with me, though. Just a few days, but if you're in the area I'd love to get dinner or something. Probably one of the best things for this to work would be for me to find an aspiring local who's willing to organize a little bit on that end... volunteers? :-)

3. Latest Post Feeds

We had NaNoWriMo 2009 up as a feed in the Latest Posts page, but that's passed. We'd like to add a feed for posts about the holidays and for the big Yuletide fandom thing going on.

What I'd like from you all: please help list what tags should be included in the above two feeds. We have a small list but we want to try to include all of the main tags people are using to represent posts about this time of year, so your help is appreciated!

4. Documentation and Support Updates

Our documentation and support teams have been working hard to go through all of the on-site documentation and update it. In particular, they've been doing a lot of scrubbing to clean up old things, removing anything that seems to be too confusing, and generally cleaning things up.

If you've been through our FAQs lately or elsewhere on the site and run into anything you felt was confusing, please let us know! We're always looking for feedback on our documentation.

For our support side, we have now set up an email address (support@dreamwidth.org) that you can use to email the support administrators directly. It will open a private support request that can be used for issues that you want to ask about but don't necessarily want to ask publicly about.

5. Deleted Account Purges

In January, we will start doing regular (nightly?) purges of accounts that have been deleted for more than 30 days. This has not been done yet, so if you have a deleted account you want to keep, you might want to go undelete it.

Once an account has been purged, the posts, comments, and other data on that account are permanently removed from the site. We will be unable to retrieve that data for you, so please be sure you only delete accounts you want to be completely removed.

6. Development Update

This week has been fairly typical for the last few: 15 bugs resolved. Our code tour this week was put together by the inestimable [personal profile] dreamatdrew and can be viewed here:

http://dw-dev.dreamwidth.org/32625.html

We also have a tour of the new bugs filed this week as well as some of the oldest bugs that are still outstanding. (Oops, I should get on those...) This tour was put together by [personal profile] sporky_rat and [personal profile] zarhooie, thank you both!

http://dw-dev-training.dreamwidth.org/14877.html

Tonight we had a code push, too, to bring live the holiday promotion as well as a few other things that have been patched this week. In particular:

* Editing comments now lets you specify a reason for the edit, which shows up nicely in the footer of the comment.

* Standardized tab order on log in pages for better accessibility of keyboard users.

* Seven new themes! Fixed a few style issues, too.

* Lots of great backend work by [personal profile] exor674 that, for now, is not doing much visibly. But soon, soon, this will give us the foundation to start modernizing the site in a big way.

7. Sjáumst!

Time to sign off. I've covered everything I need to cover (and then some!) and you are now up to date with what Dreamwidth is up to this week. In the coming week, I will be wrapping things up before my Christmas vacation. If it's a little quiet here for the rest of December, that's why!

Fly safe, have fun, see you next week!

If you guys want any recommendation for things to do and places to see in Sydney, Australia, I'd be happy to help out! (Gosh, could there be a Dreamwidth meet-up? I can think of quite a few other Sydneysider DW users off the top of my head.)

Thanks for the awesome work you all do. ♥

(haha whoops commented to the wrong news post like a champion.)

It's a pity you aren't visiting Auckland in NZ. Would have been an interesting meet :)

I'm not exactly a Sydney local (about 2.5 hours north, actually) but i can definitely recommend you the good eating places, depending on your location and budget. ;) And if there's a meet up, i'd absolutely be up for it!

On the Wellington side of things, i know it pretty well (got family there) - it's a lovely place and you'll have a wonderful time. If you get the chance, check out the Cuba St mall area. It's filled with tiny boutique stores and quaint cafes (there's a particularly nice French one about halfway down).

Oh yeah, and have fun!

Probably worth mentioning that the deleted account's comments in other journals and communities stay in place; it's just all content in that journal's subdomain.

* You must purchase 6 months or 12 months of paid time. [...]

* You will be given 2 months free extension on your existing time.

Does that mean that you get 2 months free regardless of whether you purchase 6 months or 12?

Because in that case, I don't see why anyone would want to purchase 12 months under this promotion -- it would make more sense to purchase two lots of 6 months so that you get two lots of 2 months = 4 months free.

(And if not, perhaps you can re-word the second bullet point.)

It's two months for every 6 months, so buying 12 months would result in 4 months. Sorry for the unclarity!

Ooh a DW Sydney meetup would be awesome. Count me in for that. It would be pretty cool to meet fellow DW users.

It's hard to nominate a hangout or restaurant because everyone likes different things. The first place that comes to mind is the Lindt chocolate cafe XD

holiday tags: christmas, xmas, yule, winter solstice, kwanzaa, hanukkah, chanukah, happy holidays

other random holiday tags: holiday_wishes, wishlist

I'd like to request a longer period before purging than 30 days. I know it says that, and accuracy is good, but LJ has let them hang on for months and years. DW cracking down seems unfriendly. Maybe a 6 month rolling window, so accounts deleted in May & June would start purging in January, etc.

A list of deleted accounts and their delete date somewhere would be nice, too.

[personal profile] karayan 2009-12-15 05:41 pm (UTC)(link)
I have to ask, if someone's deleted their account, why on earth should it not be removed from the site? 30 days is plenty of time for the person to change their mind and undelete.

So, aside from the style system (which is called S2), the site's display is pretty much done in something called "BML", which stands as I recall for Brad's Markup Language. However, it's an old nonstandard system that is not very well documented and hard for newcomers to learn. The goal is to replace it with another template system called Template Toolkit that has many more features and documentation.

I think the hope is that moving over to Template Toolkit will:

* Help us start splitting up the code that deals with logic and display in cleaner ways
* Have people learning to code for the system be able to learn how to work with the templates faster than BML files

Comms included?

please help list what tags should be included in the above two feeds.
For Yuletide:
yuletide, yuletide 2009, yuletide2009, yuletide 09, yuletide09, yuletide rec, yuletide recs

In fact, would it be possible to use a regex where you sweep every tag that contains the string "yuletide"? Or would that be too much resource-intensive?

I thought a may as well ask, since the account purging reminded me, are rename tokens in the works for Dreamwidth? I'm a seed account so I can't really contribute via paid time anymore, but journal renaming is something I did at least once a year on LJ and hah I love to be able to do that here too.

I should also probably ask - is there a community here where I can keep an eye on the up-and-coming new shiny things for Dreamwidth? My first thought was one of the technical stuff communities, but most of it is way over my head.

Is [community profile] the_dw_herald what you want? It watches most of the official comms and posts very brief summaries of what's going on.

Also, yes, rename tokens are planned for Dreamwidth.
